Does anyone have brakes (or whatever it is) that creak when you, for example, are driving REALLY SLOW in stop and go traffic.....or even better yet, when you are trying to squeeze into a parallel parking spot? Sounds like it's mainly from the rears, but some from the front as well. |

Buddy, When it's cold my DII loves to creak when I parallel park. Always has. Carl |

hey Buddy, My DI has the same problems. Very slow in traffic or at a light and the rear brakes make that horrible noise when I am off the brake pedal. I thought that it was caused by my rear Mintex pads so I changed them for Land Rover pads with the anti sqeaul shims on the back and the car still makes the noise sometimes. Anyone know anything to stop the noise? Would appreciate some insight. Peace Matt |

Matt, some fellow who runs a shop called "British Auto Repair" in San Diego swears it's pads rubbing against the brake calipers. His suggestion was using some very high temp. grease on the backs of the pads; he didn't sell me his only tube, but he squeezed a bit on the pads I was going to put in the disco. was it the magic potion or not, they don't squeal. on the range rover, i've gone through 2 different sets of pads (not because of wear, because of squeal), with various rubbery goo stuff from auto parts stores, all with horrible results. i'm going to hunt the guy down and squeeze some more grease from him. peter |

thanks - last time i've been there he didn't have any extras. $14 looks like an inexpensive shot at it, even if it fails. peter |

Too Weird!! I was just uner my mercedes wagon replacing the rear brake pads for the first time and was reading its Haynes maual about the grease and wondering why I would nee to apply ANYTHING to the BACK of the pads - So , here I go online to search and before I get there I stop here and I find my answer.... The Dweb Borg( not Warner ) grows....and I don't even like star trek... |

Yesterday, i've stopped by MB shop and bought a tube of "brake pad paste." CLeaned up pads on the rear brakes and put them in with the paste on the backs. the "final test" is still ahead, but this morning i drove the rangie ways more aggressively than usual, trying to provoke the engine to overheat and brakes to squeal. my attempts totally failed with the first, and 95% failed with the second (but I've only done rear brakes last night). So, it seems that the brake pad paste (how MB calls it) works its wonders! peter |

ok, here's the latest update. the brakes still squeal, however, it takes much longer for them to start squealing. i hit the base of the rear rotors with an IR thermometer when i returned home, and the temperature was about 160 deg C (320F). i was really hard on brakes, before (when the brakes squealed bloody murder) the temp. after the same trip was about 120 C (248F). Now they seem to just start squealing about the same temperature. so Dee, i'm wide open to clips. Maybe I haven't cleaned the pistons good enough, it was too dark already. peter |
