I was on my way home from Las Vegas to Los Angeles when I ran into traffic and decided to take the road less traveled (a dirt road running parallel to the freeway). Anyway, I guess I messed w/ the differential lock and left it on high. I travelled approximately 75 miles @ an average of 85-95MPH and at a downhill portion of the trip, I noticed my tach was only at 500RPMs at 90MPH. My '94 Disco was not going anywhere until I realized it was on high. So I placed the differential on neutral and started going again. My question is: how much damage did I cause to my baby?? Sorry this post is so long!

The only way I could fathom 500 rpm at 90 mph would be either the transmission or the t-case was in neutral and the engine was idling.

Yup...the 500 RPM, well, okay, maybe 800-ish, but it was at idle...when I stepped on the accelarator, all the engine did was rev and nothing else...

Sounds like the transfer case wasn't properly in gear and jumped out on the over run ( abit like 1st gear in my Series 3 shitbox ). Test driving a few Discos before we bought one, I found most had trouble going back into High and would some times jump out soon after. Your average salemans gets a worried look on his face when this happens in traffic( knock off a coupla hundred for the iffy gearbox will ya ??). I think this is caused by a lack of exercise.

Bruce.
