hi all, last night, i've been putting the street set of wheels/tires on the disco, and noticed some faint clicking when i turn the wheel forward or back so it takes all the slop out of the axle and bounces back. the click is like a very small ball peen hammer struck against a thick steel plate. does it mean that my CV joints are about to expire? there's 111kmi on the clock. peter |

Peter: Swivel oil level? Last time changed? Was it making this noise while you were turning it by hand, or driving it? ABS Sensor pushed in too far? This is a long shot, but let's hope! Pull the sensor and see if the noise goes away. When in park on an incline, does the truck roll back? Does it make a noise when the wheel is turned to full lock while driving? My truck has 145K on the original CV joints and they are doing fine (fingers crossed), but my Brother In Law's Rangie exploded its CVs at less than 60K as a result of no oil. While it is not that diffcult to disassemble the CV joint to inspect, I question whether impending disaster would necessarily be visible. You may be able to see some cratering of the star and cage and some damage to the balls, but then again, you might pull it apart and not see anything and have it grenade driving out of the driveway. If you happen to have an electron microscope out in the shed, that is another story! Do you have access to one at school? Do they have a metallurgy department? Paul |

hi Paul, - no swivel oil leaks, i don't think it has been changed in at least last 50kmi - it makes this sound when i turn it by hand, although i noticed it while off road (the wheel has seen its share of intermittent load on it); no sound is heard (yet) on the blacktop turns - ABS sensor is more likely sloppy, for the light is on and the system doesn't work - fortunately, the truck doesn't roll back on the incline, it's not like CV joint is sheared clean and no, i don't have an electron microscope in the shed; hope i'll never need one to fix my vehicle it's just funny that both rovers exhibited some character at the same time. guess it's because i decided i was about to regain control of my credit card balance peter |

I have a propensity to instantly blame the CV joints for this sort of problem, hence my questions. And, yes, I did once work for a company that had an ESM, and the Univ. Of KY once tried to get me to haul one out of one of their labs back when I was it that business. If I'd only known! Back to business. First off, I think I'd confirm the presence and level of swivel oil just to make sure. Then, try driving it in tight turns in a parking lot to see if you can replicate it under power. If it doesn't make the noise, I don't think I'd worry too much for now-it may be just telling you who's in charge and that you should start shopping for parts. I have gotten great deals from Mansfield Motors, in UK. I did both sides on my Brother In Law's Rangie for less than $600 and we replaced all the bearings and seals for that price. Peace, Paul |

thanks Paul; since i didn't hear any sounds in normal driving, i normally wouldn't have bothered bringing it up. But, i was going to throw the TT in the front axle, and in my limited experience any traction aid would bring the worst in my current drivetrain. and it doesn't make sense to go into the axle twice. peter |

Well, that changes things! If you're going to go that far, it would clearly be good insurance to throw a couple of new CV joints in there as you'll aready be tearing it down, and the TT will no doubt put an added load on the rotating parts up front. I haven't had any experience with them yet, but the cages Bill Davis sells seem like something you would want. I know that I'll have them when I rebuild my front end later this year or early next (as soon as the carpet and kitchen counters are done:-). Peace, Paul |
