this is the second time in about two weeks that this has happened. I come out of work when it has been really hot (90s) start the car and it seems to have trouble idling then stalls..its only about three seconds before it stalls. When i re crank it the car starts up no problem and runs fine. Spark plugs and wires are relatively new. Any ideas would be appreciated.

can you adjust the idler screw? When its warm, what idle speed does it read?

Not sure if this will be your problem but I had similar luck and it turned out to be my fuel pump had started to fail.

Have someone check its pressure.

G'day!

what should be the correct idle when in park and when in drive and just sitting there?

That sounds like its fine, although you might want to adjust it higher until you find the problem. Get someone to press the gas pedal while you watch the cables moving. There should be something fairly obvious to screw on the other end of the cable, and you'll hear the engine speed change as you adjust it.

I had the same problem last year... I replaced the plugs, wires, stepper motor, and finally had the fuel pump checked. This was the problem the whole time. I had the exact symptoms as you are describing, and the fuel pump solved them all.
cheers,

What's the stepper motor do in this case?

Good question. This really sounds like a more overall system problem and not an idling problem. The double crank problem matches the symptoms expressed by many with fuel pump problems. Does the engine falter at higher load? what is the age and mileage of the engine in question? Have you checked the fuel pressure yet?

The idle speed cannot be adjusted on this car. That is what the stepper motor regulates automajically.

stepper motor is new..does not lose power at any time. no power loss when heavily loaded. have not checked fuel pressure, but i will do that. When I turn off the car there is a whining sound that seems to be more noticeable than before. Is that the sound of a fuel pump before it goes bad? or is that the normal sound after the vehicle is shut off
