95 Discovery 3.9

A couple of weeks ago, I got two new belts from Nathan. I put a new one on, routed same way the other one had come off. I have gone off-road, and driven the vehicle without problems.

the other day, the belt broke. No problem, I had a spare. I put the belt on and got back on the road. within 10 min. the belt broke!

I called the wife and had her bring my manual and went to get another belt. With replacement belt in hand, I followed the diagram in the manual, which was different from how it had been routed previously.

With the correct routing, and the Tensioner at full extension, the belt will only come up the the middle of the alternator pulley.

I have checked and veified that this is the correct belt.

I installed the belt the "original" way and verified that all they pulleys turn in the correct direction.

I noticed that the belt tends to drift toward the front of the engine as it runs, eventually cutting in to the belt and throwing it off.

Has anybody else had any problems with belt installs or seen "other" than stock routings?

Thanks for any input you guys can give.

first this is not a timing belt. your truck has a timing CHAIN.
just in case you need another belt diagram here is one. just double check.

Yes it does, but in an effort to be brief, i avoided the title of serpintine belt, which I'm not sure I spell correctly any way. :)

Yep, that's the diagram I have.

The difference, is that for it to fit, someone had routed it so that it looped around the crankshaft pulley and instead of going up to the power steering pulley (As shown), it went up to the water pump, THEN to the power steering pump, and over to the Altenator

I'm going to check the Tensioner's installation, since I don't know of any other adjustments to the belts path, maybe somebody had it off in the past and incorrectly reinstalled it.

What were your symtoms?

i was just not getting the amps i was needing to run the lights. it was pretty obvious once i took a look at it (belt). there was not enough surface of the belt on the alt pulley. but i was not breaking belts. could be that your tension was a little too much.

Can you loosen the alt and rotate it downward to get more belt on it ?

I'll Check, but I don't think there is any adjustment to the alternator. It just bolts right to the block.

yeah there is no need to adjust the alt. the tensioner (#1 on diagram) does the trick.

If the belt is moving on the pulleys so badly that it is cutting the belt, there is something else wrong. why did you replace the original belt (still have it?)? Did it have a tendency to move forward on the pulleys? I have rescued other Disco owners who have had belts put on incorrectly and this (belt migration) has never happened to me yet.

Did something bend between now and then?

I think we might wish to investigate this scenario before progressing. Also, the belt for the Disco is a direct cross to the belt for a Dodge truck, but right now, I don't remember which one-anybody know? Might save you some time and money, especially if it continues.

I changed the belt due to wear. At the time, I noticed some feathering on one edge of the belt, but attributed it to age. Since it had been working well for over a month, I discarded the old belt.

Just looking at it, it appears that the water pump pulley could use an additional spacer to be DNO (Dead Nuts On). I can do this relativily easy, so I might give it a go.

i'm still concerned as to why it is about 2 inches short when trying to install it per the book.

When looking at the Tensioner (unloaded), it appears to sit with the pulley at about 1:00.
Does anybody know if this is correct?

Thanks,

Mike, A buddy of mine had the same problem with a Corvette. He replaced a worn belt and then the new one broke. he put on the old one it broke. Bought a 3rd, it broke. He took it to a shop and they found that something has thrown off the pully alignment. It was a bad bearing or a broken braket bolt or something. You

Philip S. had a similar problem on his Disco. Turned out, his alternator bracket was broken in the back.

Thanks,

Hey Mike,

How are things in Tamps? I haven't forgotten to scan those pictures, I've just been dealing with some 16 hour days lately.

I'll check the brackets, sound like a good place to start, but I'm still concerned about this routing issue.

Thanks,

Mike Cox
