I was under my disco over the weekend and noticed my Rotoflex had a couple of cracks, my question is, would it be safe to drive? I'm going camping this weekend and need the disco (approximately 200 miles, round trip, no off-roading involved ). In the event it tears completely (knock on wood), at what part of the drive shaft will I take apart to make it in 2-wheel drive mode? thanks in advance.

p.s. and yes, I already ordered a replacement from Nathan

Wes, it is safe to drive. even if the roto falls completely apart, the driveshaft has a centering peg that would stay inside the rear three-fingered yoke.
you will feel when it's not kosher to drive it - increased vibration during the acceleration, between 25 and 40 mph.
to bring your disco into a honda civic mode you need to unbolt the rotoflex, and four bolts (or nuts? i forgot) that hold the rear driveshaft to the parking brake drum. Replace these bolts (or nuts?) and tighten them so the parking brake drum doesn't wobble around. Engage the CDL and drive around in front wheel drive.

Driving a Land Rover causes the clunk when the gas is let off. :)

Seriously, mine has done that from the day I drove it off the lot. It seems pretty common.

Replaced my roto coupling way back and i hear a rubbing, howling sound cruising the highway above 50 mph. Anyone had this lately on thier d1?

Replacing mine tonight. Have the workshop manual and everything "seems" pretty straight forward. One thing I have heard issues about is the "centering peg." Is there anything special I need to do, or will it all become evident when I am under there and taking things apart? Any special tools? Also, anyone happen to know what size nuts and bolts are on there in case I break one? Thanks!

19mm. If you break one, I'll be impressed. Centralizing peg will probably be stuck tight over the pinion nut, or it might be loose in there. It shouldn't be in the way. I have plenty of pics if you need any. Enjoy.

The thing is directional and must go on the right way or you get issues.....

Thanks Blue!

Thanks Kyle! Does the roto give you any ideas on which way is which? I am guessing when I pull the old one off, just compare to new one and that should be good?

are you saying the roto is mounted backwards? I took that pic before I started messing with my roto so that I'd know how it was mounted by Land Rover...

nahh... just playing with you... but some people say that it is better to have the thick part of the roto to go agaisnt the compression when you accelerate...... but. i'm not a scientist.. just a rum, scotch, tequila, gin, etc drinker..

I like to think that the thick part is stronger and better at getting dragged along by the shaft. But WTF do I know - my bitch vibes like a madman from 65-72mph...

hum....
did you

1-grease your nipples?
2-did you check all the rubber? ( my other disco had one of the front shock upper bushings)
3-check the bearings....
4-your tires are fucked... change white letter in
5-is this your pool?

last night the Rover gods smiled upon me...

I laid on the hot pavement and rolled underneath in the dark with a flashlight to quick check tightness of steering bolts and roto bolts (all were nice & tight). I decided that I might as well grease up my nipples as long as I was already feeling dirty. All the damn nipples were lined up perfectly and pointed straight down! They were even shiny clean! It was like a rare alignment of the planets that only happens once every 5,000 years or something. I grabbed my grease gun and had at it like a greasin fool.

Actually, I know it's the roto because when I slap a new one on it rides smooth as glass. But after a few tens of miles it the roto will crack a bit and I'll vibe. gotta get a damn ujointed shaft.... shuddup about the pool! I'm ready to drain it and open my own private skate park.

On the outer circunference of the rotoflex there are arrows. Before you take the old one off you can see the arrows point to a flange, NOT open space.
That's whats important when you remount it. Make sure the arrows point to a flange.
Now, anyone ever remove that centering pin to replace your pinion oil seal? that thing is a mofo and I would love to know how you got it out. I was wailing on it with a slide hammer and it wouldn't budge

shit, I tried to locktite mine into place (see above pic) and it still came loose. It just plopped out when I pulled the shaft... You have to rig up some kind of threaded puller to yank it.
