I had a situation the other day where my 98 disco was wanting to die at a light. If i would give it a little gas it would snap out of it. I immediately thought stepper. Actually the problem went away at the next light. The next day (today)I took the stepper out to clean it. First off, I wanted to see how well it moved. I pulled on the plunger and there was this thread stripping noise and it came out. I screwed it back in and it seems OK. It was like the plunger was just barely screwed in. With the stepper laying on the engine, and the key turned to the run position (engine not started) I can see it move like 1/8th of an inch. Then when I turn the key off 10 seconds later it pops out about 1/2". It seems to move well when the computer is controlling it, but pretty stiff by hand
Now the kicker - I cleaned it up, re installed it and now it might idle high (1500-2000 rpm)for a couple seconds then come down to normal. I drove it around a while and it seemed to get better. I am wondering was the computer compensating for a stepper motor that was coming unscrewed and now will have to learn how to deal with it screwed back together all the way? Or am I just screwed and need a new stepper because I tried to "fix" it and made it worse? Thanks Sorry so long
