My understanding of dual battery set-ups as I have done with my set-up is that you can use ANY kind of batteries, as long as the 2 batteries used are of the same age, make, model and size. This will assure a long usage and no variation of charging/discharging between the batteries. |

Raul, From what I understand, it depends upon how you link them together. Some people have their standard cranking battery fit to run their engine and other things, while other people have two such batteries linked together to handle heavy electrical loads. It is also common on overland expeditions to have both a cranking battery and a deep cycle battery for running camp equipmant when the vehicle is off, or for running a winch...in a pinch. These systems can use a veriaty of different linkages, but for different types of batteries, a switch must be wired between the two. You can link two identical batteries solidly together, but I don't know much about the process, or the special hardware that is required. I suppose a good place to start would be posting why you need a dual battery set up, and asking what sort you need. Cheers, Kennith |

"i just set up my disco to fit two battery. " define "set up" are you saying you bought an isolater kit or just made a spot for the 2nd battery to go, now you are ready to drop one in? rd |

Ahh... Now this is the type of expertise we need. A question I should have bloody well asked before I went into all that detail. Please Explain in full detail, because I could stand to learn from all this too. Cheers, Kennith |

i don't have an isolator for the batteries. just connect the batt parallel to each other. the question was i have to use high performance batt or i be able to use reg batt. thanks .for your in put. |

2 batteries in parallele, not a great setup...I think your better of doing it right the first time and get an auto isolator or a manual one. Anyways, I think its safer to use the same type and age of batterries. |

I have a similar setup on my disco primarily to drive the electric winch, not for things like running a fridge. I use 2 cranking batteries, the biggest ones you can fit in with the highest CCA. As said before, don't fix types (ie cranking and deep cycle) as they won't last long. Also the more gadgets you add to the system the more losses you are likely to get. John D |
