Heya everyone, Just picked up a new Boat Today and it is REALLY Amplifying my warped rotors so I need to do a full brake job ASAP. I already know I'm converting to Vented rotors and I'm going with slotted Rotors and Kevlar Pads so I dont want to discuss the merits of slotted vs Non. I simply want feedback on who makes the BEST slotted rotors for the money. Here is what I know. 1) FOr Roughtly $650 I can get the Atlantic British kit that has 4 slotted rotors, 4 kevlar pads, and 4 seal kits. Great! THey were even kind enought to tell me they were Porterfield pads which I use on my Race Car and am VERY happy with and trust. 2) Other companies offer cheaper rotors and kevlar pads. For Instance What I want to know is. What Porterfield Pads do they use. I suspect its the R4-s compound which is their street version of their mild R4 Track Pad. 2) does Porterfield offer only 1 pad for the Rover and is Atlantic way overpriced at $130 per Pair??? Also, what rotors does Atlantic Brit use. I suspect they are higher quality than the Brembo CRAP some companies are selling. (FOR the Record I love the Brembo racing brakes but their OEM replacement stuff is pretty poor and I've seen WAY more warped Brembo rotors than I care to see again. Does anyone have any opinion on the rotors that are sold through DAP. They are cheaper @ $140pr and their Kevlar Pads are only $65pr. THey are slotted and drilled like the Atlantic Brit rotors are definately appear different in design. Ok, I'll shut up and let you guys talk. But I dont want to cheap out and be doing this again in 1 year because my rotors got shot. ANd YES I will be Towing at 80mph in very Mountainous country. THanks Guys Todd |

Todd Why don't you just call Atlantic British and ask them which porterfield pads they use and what brand the rotors are ? Seems to me your mind is made up and your just looking for specifics , they are usually pretty helpfull when you ask. Or maybe I misunderstood. Good Luck Peter |

I did that. ANd they told me they were porterfield but didn't know which pad compound it was. They said "the Kevlar ones", well all Porterfields are Carbon/Kevlar. ANd the Rotors are NOT Brembo but a British Company that they claim is very high quality. I dont have any doubt about ordering from AB. But at $650 they are very Pricey, going through DAP for instance would be only $410. But I'd rather spend the extra $200 if the $410 system will still have problems. NOw does that make sense? Thanks Todd |

Have you checked out dap? http://www.dap-inc.com. I think they have slotted rotors and kevlar pads for a lot less than that. Tom |

Tom, Did you bother to read my message. I wrote an entire paragraph about the DAP stuff and their prices. :-) Seems like Great Basin Rovers is where I will do it. Price is similar to Atlantic British but with higher quality rotors AFAICT. I'm still open for suggestions though. Thanks TOdd |

I off-road quite a bit in Florida. A couple of us went for the Kevlar pads for the sex appeal of it and in hopes of eliminating the squealing. We replaced the rear pads in under 5K miles. The rear brakes squealed terribly and worse yet, I had trouble stopping the vehicle. I have 85lb tires (Goodyear MTRs 245/75/R16 on steel rims). Our final conclusion was that the rear brake pistons did not put out enough force to use the kevlar pads effectively. Kevlar pads are designed for high speeds and lots of heat. I don't think our rigs were capable of either! Thanks, Mike B. |

Hi All, I posted a month ago about my installing DAP slotted (not drilled) front rotors and Kevlar pads all around on my 95 Disco. Here is an update: The pads do grab with slightly more affort than the OEMs with the very first "cold" stop of the day. After that, they grab moderately better and with slightly less effort. When you are really braking hard, they seem to grab progressively better than the OEMs as the effort (and panic) increases. On steep off-road, they don't chatter and groan like the OEMs do with steep creeping and seem slightly easier to modulate. As far as fade goes, they have not faded yet during my "brake test" runs down Page Mill Rd., which drops about 2200' in 8 miles with over 100 turns. On this same run, the OEMs faded slightly, Mintex moderately and Grand Auto specials horribly. However, when the Kevlar pads get hot (even on the level), they smell pretty badly. Not as bad as most overheated pads, but certainly stronger than OEM Rover (Lockheed) pads. As far as Squeal goes, yes they do. A little more than Mintex pads and a lot more than OEMs. I have not used any kind of anti-squeal on them. With the slotted front rotors, The squeal is interrupted by the grooves and it sounds like chirping birds. The slotted rotors seem to work well and I have not warped them with all my aggressive test runs. They are made by Disk Brakes Australia. http://www.dba.com.au/home.htm I bought these through DAP, but would have bought them through Bill at Great Baisin Rovers, if I had known he was selling them. SOMEBODY, PLEASE HELP HIM UPDATE HIS WEBSITE!! Having said all that, I have not been fully satisfied with the brakes on my Disco, regardless of the pads or rotors. They stop OK, but have always seemed "mushy" with too much travel. I have bled them all correctly and have braided stainless lines on the front. My neighbors brakes are much firmer on his 99 D1 and my wife's 91 Rangie brakes are really firm. Maybe it's time for a new master cylinder after 120k miles. In summary, I like the kevlar pads DAP sells better in the boonies and rural twisty roads, but I am sure they are more offensive to the noses and ears of all the flatlanders in traffic. hope this helps, Rich |

Rich, Thanks for the great write up. Thats exactly what I was wanting. I've decided on the DBA Slotted Rotors as well and I'll go the Kevlar/Comp Pad route that great Basin sells. Not sure if its the same as DAP's pads but GB say's they dont squeal to bad. We'll see, I just want better grab and no overheating. Thanks again for the help Todd |
