what's the thought on this? a couple of my shocks are leaking on '95 D1 with 68k miles. I was planning on replacing with bilsteins. do I need to replace the springs also? not really using this for too much offroad. if I need to do the springs also, what mates up well with the bilsteins? thanks.

Derek:
Yes, you can swap stock length Bilsteins into your truck without changing springs.

I've done it as well, no problems. If you are planning on ever doing your springs, I would suggest doing it at the same time. At least in the front as the shock is within the spring. Other than that, you shouldn't have any problems.

what new springs work well with bilsteins? I may as well do it all at once I suppose.

Old Man Emu (OMEs) work great with Bilsteins. If not much weight and not much off-roading the OME medium duties will suit it fine. You will love the ride! It will be stiffer, but not rough.

Thanks,

Ditto Mike B.'s impressions.

Buy your shocks and springs from either EE or Bill at Great Baisin Rovers. He is very helpful.
Did mine in 2 stages and My neighbor's monday night. Doing it all at once is a better way to go.
The Billsteins improve on-road handling significantly, but the medium OME's double the improvement, despite the 1.5" to 2" lift.
Parts cost: $280-$300 for shocks and $220-$240 for springs.

If you find the rears or not up to heavy loads, consider a set of airlift 1000 in-coil airbags as well. That way, the truck will ride well when unlaiden and can be "adjusted" for heavey loads.

Add an OME (NOT OEM or Bilstein)steering stabilizer ($55)and a set of 245/75-16 Dunlop Rover RT tires ($106 / each) and you've got yourself a very nice "dual purpose" Disco

The guys above are on the money. You can go with Bilsteins without replacing the factory springs. I did it a couple of years ago. The Bilsteins come with, I think, a lifetime warranty in case you break them.

I had the Bilsteins for over a year before installing RTE 2" lift springs on the Disco - an alternative to the OME springs.

will all OME springs combined with the bilstein shocks give me a lift? I already have a OME steering damper, but am staying away from the shocks since it seems so many people have issues with them. I take it the OME springs are ok? guess not much to go wrong there...

Derek-

The OME springs with Bilstein shocks will give you a lift of about 2". The OME springs are a good buy as many other owners on here have them.

Not too much to go wrong? No, not really when you stay with reputable products like Bilstein and OME.

Just take your time and everything should be fine.

hmmm...is that lift going to look goofy with the stock sized tires I have? I don't want to buy new ones anytime soon, because mine have lots of tread left on them.

Are there any instructions on shock replacement anywhere? I need to replace mine but I am just learning how to do things.

Jack, I was in the same boat as you. i studied the manual and learned it well. Its actually very easy. I didnt even take my tires off. On the rears, just remove the obvious bolts that hold them on and replace the shocks. On the front, remove the bolt at the bottom, and then remove the 4 bolts holding the shock toer in place. Then all you have to do is lift out the shock tower (the shock is still bolted by its upper bolt) and remove the shock from the tower in the comfort of your garage/living room/kitchen/whatever.
One thing that will help you out is to spray liquid wrench on all 8 bolts. Do it once a day for a few days before you start the job. It shouldnt take you more than a few hours (doing it your first time). Good luck and have fun.
