I have a 94 disco that has a seemingly unrepairable problem! It just wont start, and seems to have a mind of it's own of course it is a land rover. My truck has been worked on by the dealer and myself, resulting only in more grey hair and a shortage in my bank account!!Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Here are the sysmtoms:First off it has fire one minute and none the next.I have genuine workshop manuals and have completed all ignition fault tests over and over. This covers the ign.coil, amplifier, distributor, pickup etc.All tests are satisfactory which confuses me even more.I have replaced the coil, amplifier, plugs, rotor cap/arm, and even the distributor. The distributor was replaced because ther are no pickups on planet earth according to AB,RN,landrover North America etc.I have a new feul pump and that whole system seems ok.All fuses and relays seem ok as well. While waiting on the pickup for several months I decided to bite the bullet and order a distributor. But before it got there I tried starting it,and after months of setting it fired right up and ran perfectly for about an hour and then just stopped like someone flipped a switch! After fitting the new dist. it did allow me run it longer and also start and restart several times with no trouble at all. so I turn it off and think wow its fixed but the next morning it just turned over and over.By the way it does have the remote amplifier kit, which I did replace but didnt change a thing. The story just continues, ask me and ill tell you more. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!! |

Check your wires. Sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere, probably one of the wires running to the amplifier or the coil. Keep in mind that even though the wires may look good, the leads inside can still be broken. When the wires gets moved around, you can have connection one moment and the car runs fine, the next moment the connection gets broken and the car dies. Also, what a bout the fuel supply? Is the pump running? It could be a bad pump or not enough power going to the pump. Have you checked the connector in the rear wheel well? |

This could sound silly but is it the security system? An intermittent fault could be immobilising the engine. A friend had a similar problem with a daihatsu. The garage did a thorough overall with appropriate spiralling costs, all with no success. Turned out to be a faulty wire in the alarm system. |

Fuel system is operating properly.I also replaced amplifier/coil wires. Thanks I have checked for alarm/wiring proplems and as far as I can tell everything is in order.I even checked things like the trailer wiring harness. (dont know though) Thanks |

Do the ignition lights light up when it quits? Any fault codes? Checked fuel pressure? Checked relays in fuel system? I'm also wondering whether the ignition switch is going bad |

checked all that and it good! But I am getting a fault #14 which to my knowledge is the temp sensor. It comes on sometimes but it is due to a small crack in the plug.It goes off if I stableize the plug.(it only does that if I bump it or somethig) However just before my ing.trouble I had the radiator and water pump replaced by the dealer due to some horrific cooling problems! And to be terribly honest thats pretty much when my problems started!! But my warranty had just died, and that really twisted things up...please respond Thanks |

My suggestion would be to go for the basics first. When it is not working, which don't you have: spark or fuel. Good clues can also be had when it cuts off; if it sputters first, then it's probably fuel; if it cuts off directly, then probably electrical. Also, tell us more about the circumstances when it actually runs. Time between attempts, etc. Thanks, Mike B. |

I had this problem intermittantly with my '95 a while back -- one minute she started up fine, the next minute she wouldn't -- no spark getting through at all. I changed the coil but the problem continued. Then someone on this board suggested a problem with the security system, which can disable the ignition and sometimes refuse to release it. The temporary solution when she wouldn't start was to turn the security system off and on several times in succession either with the key fob (if the batteries were good) or just using the key in the drivers side door. This seemed to rectify the problem temporarily until I took the truck to the dealer and had them reprogram the security system, which seems to have been the permanent fix. haven't had any problems for a couple of years. There is a section in the service manual with a more elaborate method using the key fob to reset the security system. Hope this helps. ---Norm |
