Hello all,

Time again to bask in the light of my stupidity. After reading the thread entitled "POP", I went out for a Tuesday drive. Nothing unusual here, just light street rovering in a thoroughly clean (for once in it's life) Discovery II.

I was idleing fourth towards a traffic light, and heard a loud noise. I liken it to my vehicle being hit by a rifle round from long range. (don't ask me how I know what that sounds like) As a matter of fact, it sounded so much like it that I immediatly sped off into the distance and inspected the side panels. Nothing, naturally, or I would have a more glorious story to tell.

The offending sound erupted from what appeared to be the space a couple feet behind the passenger seat. Upon checking for damage briefly, I found none.

I am at a loss as to what could make such a noise without leaving a noticable mark (or hole). I was wondering if you guys (and gals) could help me out...

Cheers,

Kennith

Negatory man, I thought that at first, but a Hummer throwing a pebble into sheet aluminum at 50 mph isn't that loud, and I was under 10mph.

Happened to my Disco I yesterday (tuesday) as well, I never did figure out what made the noise, sounded like it was coming from the same place you are describing and was definitly not a rock. That is really weird.

I had a loud bang in my drivers side door and then a few miles later there was even a louder bang (sounds like the same thing). The noise was very loud I thought it was a branch smacking into the side of the Disco. When I went to wind down the window guess what, a spot weld had broken and the arm had broken. So, I suggest you see if the window winds down or falls down.

If your radio was on, it could be a reception burst. I had this happen to me a few times, there will be a sudden "pop" but it comes from the speakers. i too a first thought it was a gun shot. And it would also explain why it happened to two people.

Well, I haven't had any ill effects, so I'm not worried. I suppose it could have come from the rear bass speaker.

As far as the spot welds, all my windows work, but I am going to really get under there soon anyway to work on some new designs I have come up with for mods.

Cheers,

Kennith

I had this happen once in a passenger car, but I'm pretty sure it *WAS* a gunshot, judging by the neighboorhood I was in...drove quickly away.. :)

After installing a Lock Right auto locker in a Toyota FJ40 mine did something similar that scared me, with the autolocker the side "gear" sometimes slam together under acceleration. Shook the whole vehicle, I actually stopped and looked under there and shook the tire to see if it was still ok.

Don't think you probably have a autolocker in your vehicle though.

My Disco used to make a smilar sound. There is a small dent in my muffler. It poped out as it heated up and back in as it cooled off. It made a pretty good 'bang' each way. Any dents in your muffler?

Thanks,
Mike B.

Couldn't it be it back-fired?

I seriously doubt my Disco II backfired.

She is way too well mannered for that. It was a bit louder than backfiring anyway. It didn't sound like a gun shot...is sounded like a bullet hitting my car.

Could it be the pan hard rod?

Well, it came from behind the seats, so I have ruled that out.

Have yon wench sitist in thou'st backseat, procede forth whilst aforementioned wench listens with due and dilligent care for the precise location of the offending rougue bang - if never found nor heard thou must have been inhaling crack of dubious distinction.
