my 1996 d1 is squeeking like a rusty toyota tercel's brakes. now i realize that disco can make a jungle of sounds but this is totally new and only occurs in warmer weather and when i veer (while driving) lft/rgt. this will only occur while driving around 30+ mph, and remains, but gets louder! well it sucks and i'd like to remedy it asap. could it be my brake pads, i doubt it because i just got the 60,000 mi. makeover. could it be the allignment, or perhaps i just need a wheel balance? i have also heard of GLAZING or something? what is it and how can i prevent it? |

I have the same problem. I inspected my brakes and they appear to be fine. The noise is annoying and embarassing. I believe I might need to get my rotors redone. I you find the problem, please let me know. Thank you. Jim |

check your wheel bearings, if you have been offroad lately. |

To my knowledge, brakes are a wear item and not a service item. To me, this means that they are not automatically replaced as part of the 60K mile service. I'd jack up the front end, remove the wheels, and take a look at the whole mess. I'd bet you find the problem in less than a minute. Thanks, Mike B. |

skara, I think you named it correctly: the "60k mile makeover". Even though you paid the techs well they probably did not dig very deep, and as the fellas above suggest start with brakes and wheel bearings. You might want to consider ujoints and another issue that has come up for a second time on my '96. I had a chirping sound that ended up coming from the front pinion. Under warranty, the dealer replaced the dust cap behind the flange and the sound went away. Now, almost two years later, I have a similiar sound but it's coming from a GBR rebuilt third member. I plan to pull the flange and address it myself. On both occaisions when the noise has picked up, some WD40 around the pinion has quietened the chirping. |

its ounds like your brakes...dirty calipers and pistons arent allowing the brakes to completly open up causing the intermitent squeak. pull the tire and see if the brakes are resting against the rotors |

Does the sound stop if you apply your brakes?? If its pad/rotor related it should. Bruce. |

Mine does the same thing and I have replaced the pads with non-metallics recently. Put on the brakes and the squeaking stops, but this could be merely loading the bearing. I personnally think mine is the wheel bearing as it has 92K on it (its a '95 Disco, by the way), and I hear a few more complaints up near the front hub (tinking, etc.) I read on this board somewhere that the bearings should be regreased and reset (tightened) sometime around 90K. Anyone else experience this? Robc |
