I need to replace my 96 DI's swivel ball oil as part of the 60k coming up. I'm new to disco's and what plug drains and which is for the refil? Standard 80/90 oil is ok right?? And how much does each one hold? Thanks Rick |

Rick It's great that you are doing your own maintanance. Much more fun than paying someone else. There are three plugs. The top one to fill, the middle one is the correct level of oil/grease, the lower one is the drain. It is best to fill after turning the wheels all the way to one side so that the hole is clear of the ball, then turn wheels again to do the other side of the truck. You can also use the one shot grease tube from LP which has the correct amount of lube already in it. Otherwise use the same gear oil that you would use in the diffs. Randall |

Three plugs. Bottom is the drain. Middle is the level plug. Top is the filler plug. If your doing a 60k service I suggest you drain all the oil and refill with 'One Shot Swivel Housing Grease STC3435'. Turn wheel full lock and squeeze the applicator into the top plug. At 60k plus you will get oil drips from the swivels - they rust. Landrover now fill swivels, old and new, with grease. They never need doing again unless dismantled. |

Rick, A 1/2" open end wrench will work to remove them. They will probably be tight so be carefull not to round the plug. Not a lot of space in there to work. There is a thread in the archives about oil vs grease fyi. I'm trying grease in one and oil in the other to see what happens. All agree though to keep something in there! Jaime |

After the 60K mi. service on the swivel ball oil, when is the next recommended service interval? thanks |

Wes, If you wade through deep water, it is good to check the oil to see if any water has entered. If you have leaky seals, it is good to check it frequently. After removing the plug the first time, it is much easier to remove the second and onward time. Considering what can happen if they go dry, I check mine monthly just for peace of mind. Jaime |

I opened up the fill plug and there appeared to be grease already in the ball. If I open up the drain below, will grease come out? Just to check and make sure that there is grease instead of oil. |

Rick, The grease is really more like a thick oil versus the grease you would normally think of. I've read that if it is warm enough, it will flow. Possibly slowly remove the bottom plug and see what happens. I haven't checked mine with the grease so let me know what you find out. Jaime |

There is in the newer models a thick grease, and there are no more plugs. May be your Disco was serviced with this other lubricant type, instead a liquid oil. You can search more info in previous threads, because this was discussed in the past. Good luck |
