I have been having problems with my 96 Discovery starting. It cranks, but won't start. I put a new fuel pump in it and nothing changed. I then replaced the wire harness that goes from the fuel pump and plugs into the wires over the left rear tire. Seem to help, still it stalls now and then. I called several land rover dealers and they told me to check the fuel pump relay, but I can't find it. Does anyone know specifically where this is? |

Have you checked the fuel cutoff switch Inertia switch)? |

Yes, I checked the inertia switch. Land Rover told me that the inertia switch rarely goes out. I pushed it and it didn't do anything. Thanks though. Any idea concerning the fuel pump relay? |

Relay is located in the passenger side footwell. |

Just replaced the tachometric relay hidden behind the dash on the firewall to solve a similar problem on my 96 Disco. My stopped working up at Cape York, Australia..... The tachometric relay is also known as a fuel pump relay, which means that it only responds and sends a voltage to the pump when the engine is cranking or running. The relay receives a signal from the negative terminal of the coil - this confirms that the engine is turning. This type of relay is used as a safety device: if the vehicle is involved in an accident when there is a possibility of a fuel line being fractured, the engine will stop due to a lack of fuel, the signal from the coil stops and the supply voltage to the pump is removed. This is not the same as the interia switch. Good Luck |

I can't start my disco 96 (australian), it stoppped suddenly on a hill, the necssary 3 km from home and we have recovered her to a place of safety. No problems before running like a dream and suddenly put put pooh, just managed to pull in and park it. I'm checking the fuel filter/line tomorrow as I've noticed that the tank has not been hissing when removing the cap and it's sometimes not been responsive going uphill lately. We've disconnected and reconnected the battery. No spark off the king lead or any other HT lead! The plugs look fine, although dry even after a fair bit of cranking. Checked the inertia switch looks ok. Coil has no voltage! on Ignition sw 1,2,3 Does the Australian model have the diagnostic display under the passengers seat? The fuel pump works prior to crank with ignition Sw pos 2 for 4 seconds each time. The tachymetric relay is next I reckon after the fuel line. I'm still worried about the no voltage to the coil Has anyone any other advice or hints. Apart from that I love my disco.... |
