When I started my 97 Disco this morning, it had a low pitch whine. The higher the RPM's got, the higher pitch. I thought it must be a belt, but when I opened the hood, the sound seemed to come from the top of the engine. It sound's like a turbo charger whine. Unless the LR Fairy made a visit to my disco last night and put one on, I'm kinda worried. Any help would be appreciated. |

Chris Just a WAG, but could it be the waterpump or altenator that is going south..? Carl |

Sounds like a bearing. Sometimes alternators whine when producing large current to charge after starting. Get a long screwdriver, put end of handle against your ear, end of driver on alternator, then elsewhere on engine - valve covers, water pump if you can, see if one of them produces a loud whining noise. jp |

Ding ding ding, we have winners. It was the alternator. It died yesterday and I put two and two together with everytime I did something that used juice (window, brake lights, etc...) the whole vehicle went crazy. Limped home at night with headlights only. No radio. Good thing my battery is good Now, I think my ext. warranty covers it, but if someone knows how to fix under $100, let me know |
