95 DI....A/C seems to be losing its cool. I've located the sight glass, but don't know WTF I should be looking for. Any insight?

What type of freon is required and can a DIY'er recharge the system or is it a PITA?

Ok turn on your AC and let it run for a few minutes. Now while its still running look at the sight glass. The sight glass should be clear or maybe a few tiny bubbles (not many). If there is alot of bubbles or the rushing of liquid then your low on charge. This is assumeing the sight glass in on the liquid side of the compressor. the bubbling effect is called "flashing". This is the liquid refridgerant boiling off rapidly. In a properly charged system you should not get this flashing effect. If the sight glass has a wet/dry sensor in it (a small colored dot in the middle) it should be either yellow or green. This indecates the presence of liquid in the system or just vapor. Look on the sight glass cover for what color indicates what. As refrigeratnt goes, it all depends. Most older cars (pre 99 or 97) used R12. The newer cars/trucks are useing 138a or 134a (one replaces R22 the other replaces R12 but i forget which is which). If you have your AC systen repaird you will pay a SHIT load of cash to recharge it with R12. Best bet is to pay a shop to the R12 to 138a or 134a retro fit. The retro fit kit will allow your compressor and system to handle the new refrigerant, since the new stuff and R12 have diffrent operating pressures and boiling points(same goes for you home AC units although R22 wont be phased out of manufactureing for a few more years, R12 is no longer made due to CFC`s and you can only use whats left on the shelfs for now and its not much. a 30lbs can of R12 used to be lke 60 bucks and is now selling for well over 1000.00). Hope this helps.. Oh and dont try to charge your own system unless you know what your doing. YOu can seruously Hurt yourself if you charge your Autos AC in the wrong manner. Thats if they even sell you the stuff without a RESE card or Masters licesnce.

Then what the hell do they use?? Sure don`t think its an amonia or salt brine system bud. Freon is the same as Refrigerant, it was just a make by Dupont I believe.

Thanks for the replies. I've been out of town all weekend so I'm just reading them today.

Jeff, I'll take a look at the glass this evening to see if I have bubbles or flashing.

CEJB, Any idea on the price of the 134a?
