The Saga Continues! I still can't get the called for belt to fit.

I am suspecting two possible problems.

1) Tensioner is going bad, and when engine is torqued, the belt gets slack in it and starts to jump off the pulleys. I have noticed a little bit of chatter from the area when I start it up, but it goes away.

2) Some time back, I replaced the timing chain and gears. If I missed putting a spacer in for the Crank Shaft Pulley, then impropoer alignment could be my problem. (But that was a couple of months ago, why would it wait until now to appear?)

I have a 95 Disco with the 3.9 engine. If another 95 Owner out there could look at theirs and tell me if the Water Pump Pulley and the Crank Shaft Pulley line up flush with each other? When looking at mine, if I put a level across my water pump pulley and extended it across the front of my crank shaft pulley, my crank shaft pulley appears to be about 4mm recessed from being even with the water pump pulley.

Thanks for any help you can give.

The crank shaft pulley appears recessed from the water pump pulley about 4mm because they are two different types of pulleys. The water pump and the tensioner pulleys are smooth and a little wider than the remaining grooved pulleys. Just make sure the grooved pulleys are in line and the belt should be somewhere in the middle of the other two. Plus the water pump pulley has a ridge on the front and back to prevent it from walking off.

Yep,

That's what I have. Thanks for checking.

I'm really starting to suspect my tensioner.

Anybody have any experience on this?

Had a tensioner blow up into little pieces at 75 mph. Very bad, oil everywhere and hole in hood. Replaced tensioner now before bad things happen (it is a rover you know). The only really bad thing was I had to purchase it (tensioner) from the dealer.
Good Luck

Still leaning towards tensioner. this would also explain whay it is starting up now, despite being non-OEM routed. If it is failing to hold corret tension under acceleration, it would allow the drift that I am observing.

Anyone got a price on the tensioner assembly. I have 113K on this vehicle and "patching" ain't gonna cut it.

Thanks,
