i live on a washboard dirt road, about 3 weeks ago i noticed a vibration noise when i'd go over the washboards.....jump ahead 3 weeks. it has gotten progressively worse. 96 disco -it doesn't matter if the truck is warm or cold. -it now also occurs sometimes on paved roads if i hit a bump. -i think it occurs most when i am steering to the left (not positive about this one) -it also seems to happen more often when someone is in the passenger seat. -it sounds a little bit like if you drag your butt across the bottom of a bathtub (sorry for this one, but it's as close as i can get) that resonating vibrating sound. -my abs is disconnected. -if i hit a bump it lasts about 20 seconds or so then goes away. any thoughts? |

but the abs fuse has been removed. it's also a different sound than abs activating, it's louder, more mechanical sounding. |

Have you checked your bushings? Also check to see that all 4 wheels have no movement other than rotation around the axle. Check lugs. I actually had lugs come undone after a change of tires. |

i'll take a look at the bushings. but already checked the tightness of the lugs. any other potential causes? |

Do you mean a dry bum on a dry bath sound? If so, it could be something loose, like a bracket rattling against a tank, body panel or even bumper bar. If its a high frequency vibe, its probably small and maybe sprung. Fix number two is crank up the stereo. Good luck. Bruce |

It sounds like the front top bushings. How many miles do you have on the shocks. Rico |

more of a wet rear in a wet bath tub without any water in it....too graphic, huh? to the best of my knowledge, the shocks have about 100k on them.....in the last 50k about 5% easy to moderate offroad. |

Steering dampner? Could be loose or broken. Do you also get some vibration coming through the steering wheel? Could a shock be broken. Thanks, Mike B. |

I think 100k on shocks is about past their limit. Also check for swivel pin slop, this will give you shakes/shimmies, and steering damper also should be past its use by date, especially if doing a lot of washboard driving. Check steering balljoints also. I had a shimmie in the front, put it in for swivel pins, turned out it was a near new shock with an inch of dead travel at one end. jp |

"to the best of my knowledge, the shocks have about 100k on them" sparhawk, put on a new set of OME shocks and even if the cause of the rattle isn't the shocks (and I think it is) you'll feel like you're driving a new truck. I change my shocks every 30k miles or so. |
