I have always loved Range Rovers and am currently considering selling my Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4 to buy one. I have a couple questions I am hoping you all can help me with. Specifically I am looking at a Discovery and would like to spend under $19K.

Sorry for the long list of questions. If you have a recommendation of a site with buyers info. it would be greatly appreciated.

Are there any years that should be avoided (I was looking at '97-'98ish)?

Anything I should watch out for when buying a Discovery?

How is the overall fuel economy? What do you get on average (it will be better Than what I get now, believe me)?

My friends always warn me about repair bills with Range Rover. How is the reliability? Are they really that much more to repair?

What is towing like with a Disco? I'd like to be able to pull a tent trailer and my track car when needed ('68 BMW 2002 - around 2000lbs).

How isthe room in the back seat for car seats and such?

Any guess at what I should expect to pay on an annual basis for maintenance?

What should I expect to pay for a low milease '97-98?

Any additional insight you can provide? I'd greatly appreicate it.

Thanks,
Todd

Todd, As an owner of an a truely great vehicle (the '02 not the Ram) you can appreciate this. The Range Rover is a car. Land Rover is the marke. It's a Land Rover Discovery not a Range Rover Discovery. Get it? :)

Think of it kinda like when someone walked up to you and says "cool BEAMER" and they should be saying "cool bimmer" since yours has four wheels and not two.

Honestly if all you need is something with good mileage and able to tow you might be better off with something else. Land Rovers are awesome but they're not without there quirks. The years you're looking at is good. Mileage you'll get in the low to mid teens and it will be able to tow your '02 as long as the total weight is under 5,000#'s of your 2002 and trailer. Maintenance will depend on how much you do yourself and these are easy trucks to work on. Now if you think you might catch the bug and take this thing off road then go for it. It's a new set of driving skills that you can pick up. You won't be hitting that apex on a Disco unless it's with your frame on a rock climb but you can still heal toe and left foot brake :)

Good luck.

Oops. Call me a dumb ass. Sorry about that.

Actually the track rat is what I am learning to drive. Previous vehicle include (sorry, I used to be a Jeep guy):

1987 Wrangler - lots of $$$ in mods
1993 Wrangler
1997 Grand Cherokee
1986 Cherokee
and my favorite and most missed...

1953M38A1 Military Jeep - 19K original miles and it went everywhere!

Mileage isn't a big issue. I was just curious. I currently get 11mpg.

Thanks for the lesson ;)

If your going to get a Discovery, start with a 97' and go up. Don't get one that has been abused or ragged out. Fuel economy isn't that great, prob. 15mpg. Repair bills will be high if you take it to a dealer or a local shop. My advice, learn how to do the little stuff yourself, it's easy and it will save you mega $$. You can tow a good amount, slowly. Your maintenance will just depend. Land Rovers are just something you have to love. Most of those who own one and continue to put up with the problems dont really care because they love their truck. They are great vehicles, highly capable, and depending on the one that you get are very dependable. I have a 97', 57,000mi. and have had very little problems, but i take good care of it.

Good luck.

I picked up a 99 Disco I for $18,950 it had 51,000 miles. The 99 is a steal right now because many are coming off leases and 99 was also the first year for the Disco II which tips in around $23,000. So the 99 Disco I is devalued, but an excellent buy!

I have had lots of different 4x4s F150, Scout, Jeep, Tracker, Landcruiser...

My experience with the Disco I is that it is built very stout. Not fantastic on acceleration or gas milage (15mpg) but feels very capable. It is a smooth ride, lots of suspension travel.

It is a very easy machine to work on, so far. I have changed a turn light lens, and installed a set of used jump seats. The parts are easy to get since they have made the same unit for so long. Most of the aftermarket stuff seems to be higher quality, roof racks etc.

The ride for the passengers is pretty comfy too.
