Just had my 98 Disco TDi MOT'd, and the mechanic pointed out a couple of "minor leaks" on my front a rear dif's.

The front one it just above the steering damper, and looks like a rubber seal.

The rear one is in the same place, on a rubber seal.

Easy to do? (i.e. cost much if I take it to garage?)

Also, what would cause it? Other than being a land rover. I've been doing some "casual" off road for a few months now. By casual, I mean between green landing, and what some of you guys do. ;)

Any help appreciated.

Horness

Check your breather tubes - are they or their fittings clogged - if so this will cause the pressure buildup in the diff to push oil out the pinion seal.

I'd check this first before replacing seals.

I'm seeing the same trouble. How hard is it to change the pinion seal? Parts required etc...
Anybody thats done it before.

Thanks,

Alex

On the rotobomb ones it is a PITA. On the other ones it is not bad. A wrench a long screwdriver and something to drive the seal back is what you need.

I agree on the rotobomb. What a PITA! Mine when out driving up to Va and I replaced it today. 4 hours and a blow torch to finally get the damn thing off. LR sells a kit to do this or you can just buy the gasket. Now I know why they sell a complete kit... because you have to beat the hell out of it just to get the flange off.
Oh well fixed now and driving again Sat heading back to TX.

Changing pinion oil seal is dead easy, basically remove prop, remove big castellated nut on flange, remove oil seal, new one in, refit everything. Rotoflex-side might be more troublesome as mentioned.

Did this on Otto, described on his pages: http://home.halden.net/discovery

If I can do it, anyyone can...

Thanks guys - I'll have a look.

On the "Rotoflex", what is it, and how do I tell?

There is a local garage opened by two ex-Land Rover mechanics who only specialise in Landy's. I may pop my Disco down there, to save me the hassle and headaches.

It's a rubber piece, a doughnut, on the propaxle. Reduce transmission noise.

"IF IT AIN"T LEAKING, ITS OUT OF OIL"
Keep them bleeding to know that there is still some oil...

Anybody have parts number or kit parts for the pinion seal replacement job? I'm getting ready to do my u-joints so this would be perfect timing as I'll have access to it. I've checked and no Roto-Flex for me. :-)

Thanks,

Alex Cabrera
