The problems are that I do not have reverse and when at a standstill, the truck hardly moves when I step on the gas. If I shift to 1, then it moves fine, then manually shifting it to 2 and 3 causes it to run fine. It's as if it gets stuck in 3rd gear when starting from a dead stop. So far, I've put in a 'new' transfer box, new transmission oil filter (and new gasket and 'O' rings). I've filled it with fresh ATF. There was only fine metal dust at the oil drain plug, no metal chunks. Any ideas, Kyle, or anyone? Your input, as always, is appreciated. Javier |

For starters , how much crap (realistically) did you get out of the pan? If you have manual low you really should have reverse so it sounds kinda odd. The planet assembly is always so damn loud in these thigns and is prone to coming apart in quite alot of transmissions so that might be where you metal came from. Was it making noise before all this ? A whining sound when taking off ? If the planet assembly didnt come aprt it might just be a servo or another control related problem. is the thing under warranty? Kyle |

Its not uncommon to have some shifting problems immediately after an ATF change, caused by crud stopping the valves in the valve body from moving properly. These valves control which gear you are in and can result in the wrong gear, limited selection or worse no drive at all at least momentarily. Drive it for a few days as see if normal service returns. If it doesn't then come on back and we'll go further into this |

"I have a 4sp ZF, when I select "D" the vehicle won't move, when I select "1" the vehicle moves off. I can then select "D" and continue to drive normally. If I stop I have to start in first again. Why? A. A sprag clutch has "inverted" and will need replacing. No further damage will occur if you continue to drive but you will need to select "1" every time to start moving. A rebuild is required to correct this." Now if you don't have reverse after going to 1st then I am not sure whats going on. I have seen this sprang clutch issue posted once before and I think the chap said that it fixed itself. Now the next question is do you want to try to fix it? Ron |

Kyle thtas why I didn't offer up the sprag clutch theory and why I suggested driving it for a few days to see if it would clean itself up Chris Browne |

There was very little, say 1/8" thick worth of metal particles surrounding the magnet tip of the drain plug. There was a whining sound coming from down under. But since I've changed the t-box, it has gone away. Of course, there was also the grinding sound that turned out to be the bearing that the input shaft rides on, at the t-case side. Unfortunately, my truck has been out of warranty since I bought it used in '97. Do you think the governor assembly would cause these symptoms? What about the kickdown cable? Thanks again, Javier |

Losing manual low or reverse is a pretty severe thing.. A failure like the one Ron posted or of that magnitude is really the only thing that will cause it.. Wish I had better news about it.. Kyle |

Chris, I've been driving it on short trips since Monday, about 50 miles so far. Of course, I have to plan my trips around not having reverse. I still have to start in 1 then shift up. Ron, I'm inclined to just find another, used transmission and replacing mine. But if the diagnostics from you all indicate that it's a relatively easy fix, then I may proceed with a rebuild. Kyle, I am sure I have more than one problem. My guess is that they ocurred at the same time, but are independent of each other. So sprag clutch, valves, governor assembly are on my short list of things to check/replace. Not in that particular order, of course. It makes sense to buy a ZF rebuild manual at this point if I'm going to tackle it myself. Javier |

Hmm , if its just a mechanical failure of the sprag its fairly easy to fix once the damn thing is out. You wont have to break the packs down or get into the control portion of the unit... Just keep in mind it has to be very clean. Everything should be spotless. One little hunk of debris can ruin your day. Kyle |

humm, Good luck. I think Marty has a ZF book. Maybe he will know where to get one (I don't even have one). Let us know how it turns out. Ron |
