I was pressed for time and overdue for an oil change before a trip, so I took the '97 D1 to the local Jiffy Lube. There the computer and the oil change professional insisted that I use 20/50 oil on my older, high mileage (85K), vehicle. Who can argue with a computer? I figured that the summer is hot, so the viscosity would not hurt... Is there a potential problem with running the heavy oil (not on the list of oil grades in the manual) that should make me seek another immediate change?

Depends on how tight the engine still is....

this viscosity was the manufacturers recommendation for the 3.5l V8 engine from 1970 til I dont know. As it is summer, the low-point viscosity (or however it might be described; the "20") is not relevant then.
(@ www.rpiv8.com there somewhere are a few words about the oil to use with the V8).

Anyway, my microwave-oven adviced me to use 10W/40 or 15W/40 and that is what I do, and keep on using :) :) :) ...

I recently had my 2001 Disco II in the dealership for the recalls. While I was waiting, I talked to the service manager about a slight "pinging" noise that I hear when accellerating. He asked what oil I was using, and I said 10W/40 synthetic, and he said that in the summer they use 20/50 dinosaur oil. He said this might help quite down the engine a bit.

So, it's not listed in the user's manual, but 20/50 is what my dealer uses.

RPi suggests Valvoline 20W50 Racing oil (VR-1 in the US) which has worked very well for me. I'd avoid Amsoil synthetic motor oil, especially the 20W50 racing oil -- it's so slick it will blow past the rings of a Rover V8.

Hmmmmmm,

Am I doing wrong by using Mobile 1 5w-30 on a D2 with less than 30K Miles?
