I have a bad injector, but I'm not sure which one. Last night I pulled all the plugs and found the one that looked the worst, then changed that injector (and put in new plugs). That wasn't the one. How do I tell which injector is the bad one? I don't really want to spend the money on a full set if I don't have to(If it ain't broke...don't fix it!) Thanks |

Good question (first off, dont have an answer). I only can tell that some clean them in ultrasonic bath (as found in chemical labs). This shoulnd´t be expensive and could be done to them whether good or bad. JE Engineering test them like this: the injectors are mounted each above a glass with a scale so the amount of fuel delivered by each can be mearured. Diesel injectors can be tested by a hand-pump with a pressure gauge or pulled out of their seat from the cylinder head (not directed towards human beings or animals!) and the spray pattern observed while cranking - perhaps the latter can be done to the V8´s injectors, but I would hesitate to have an injector spraying higly explosive stuff aorund me. I am looking forward for someone to answer your question, too ! Besides - how do you know that one injector is faulty. |

Good question...like maybe more than one bad? I don't know. That's why I need to know how to tell if they are bad or not. |

Why do you think an injector has gone bad? |

I have read on here that it is a pretty common problem, and mine fits all of the characteristics: Takes a long time to start, runs poorly once it does start, clouds of white smoke when first started, etc... Let it run for 2-3 minutes and all is fine. Acts like it has the choke on. |

ok , greg , here is how I do it. You take a long screw driver or mechanics stethiscope and run down the injectors one at a time while the truck is idleing. there is a possiblility that you will find one thats not snapping. If you find one not snapping then there is your issue. If all are snapping then move onto pulling the plug wires one at a time (I ground them to kill them but pulling them is a little easier for most) until you find one that doesnt affect the engine at all. I take it that the truck is idleing roung and suffers a loss of power? Or do you think the injector is just leaking down ? Kyle |

I think it is just leaking down while it is parked. Is there any way to check for that? It runs like a champ a few minutes after it is started and all of the extra fuel clears out. Any ideas? I'll try the other things you mentioned, but I don't know if it will help in this case. Thanks |

A company called Marron will clean and test the electric injectors fairly cheaply - Porsche guys use them. They give you a report on their state, recommend if any should be replaced. jp |

Try this, stop the engine then restart it immediately. If it runs fine then stop it again, and leave for a while to allow any leak down to take place. |

OK...but then how will I know which one is bad? I have already done that. |

There is actually a leak down test machine that the injectors get put on. I suppose you could pull the rail up and mock something up so that the pump could pressurize them.... Be carefull witht that deal though,,,FIRE FIRE.. Kyle |

Sounds like an idea...Maybe with a bicycle pump or something? How about a bicycle pump attached to the pressure relief valve on the side of the fuel rail. With all of the injectors out and hooked to the rail, it could possibly work, couldn't it? Or if I just fabricated something to connect directly to the injector while it is out of the engine. That could work, too, right? Let me ask you...what would YOU do? (WWKD?) Thanks |

One more question for you... Do the injectors have to be connected to the electircal plugs in order to do a leak test like this? I wouldn't think so, as they are leaking while the truck is parked, but you never know. |

Hmmm , what would I do...... lol now we could get into trouble pretty fast. I would pull all of the injectors and first look down in the tops of them for debris and to insure that the injector screen is still in place. If that didnt show me anything I would make a little something up that I could slip over those O rings and get a good seal on. Maybe a tube that I could fill with a little gas and then use some sort of pump (Be carefull and dont go ove about 60 PSI or so) to pressurize the whole mess.. What ever you put together is gonna have to be pretty stable because you will need to hold that pressure on it for a little while and see if the injector weeps.... Kyle |
