Dumb yet simple question:
Would increased airflow through the grill/radiator increase cooling? I have 2 Hella 4000s on the brush bar which has blocked some air from the grill. I know our trucks run hotter than normal trucks but...
Is there a remedy? Different grill? Cut the grill out?

D1 or D2? The D2 also pulls alot of air from down low under the grill.

My bad. D1. I'm not speaking of the intake for the system via the air box but just straight cooling for the engine through the grill.

FWIW, and I've just been over some cooling trouble, my Disco runs cool as a cucumber. I recently blew my expansion tank and the Disco was cooling really crappy 'cuz the system couldn't maintain pressure. After replacing the expansion tank, hoses (precaution), and T-stat, back to normal. BTW, I live in Vegas, love to drive it stop and go in our wonderful traffic and blast the A/C. Seriously, it never moves the needle past the lower 1/4 of the guage. If your engine is really becoming that hot, it should begin to sound like a Chevy Blazer...if it doesn't, then your fan's viscous coupling isn't operating properly to pull enough air through the radiator (not to mention the two fans on the front of the radiator that should kick on when the heat turns up).
Could the lights be restricting the air? Possibly. But I would check your viscous coupling, thermo switch for the 2 fans, pressure leaks in the cooling system, and the condition of the radiator and coolant. Again, FWIW, don't put a band-aid on your elbow to fix that sore on your knee.

Over here in Gulf region, LR did a FREE upgrade to all 94 + Discos - 120A alternator (high AC loads), different grille, baffles to control air flow. The grille is a bit like a D2 - no plastic bars, just a big inlet with wire mesh in it, 50th Anniversary badge (cos it came out in 98). There are baffles above the lights, and underneath. In 120F ambients, AC on continuous, mine never moves off the normal point (about 40% scale), but you can hear the viscous come in and out.

There was some guy on here a while ago that put hood vents on his disco. That seemed like a neat idea. Any thoughts?

JP, any pictures? The D2 here in North America still has the plastic bars in the grill.

I think this is a pic of the Gulf States grill upgrade, but it doesn't look the same as the one found here:

Craig,
I would be interested in getting more info on a swap. In AZ we run awfully hot here, and more airflow through the compartment might not be a bad thing.

Does anyone have any ideas how to do the swap?

I like it. I don't care for the body color grill but the black one is nice. Anyone know what the part number is?

Al, you can get the Saudi spec grill from www.northeastbritishparts.com for $60. That's where I got mine. It comes black and looks just different enough without being too over the top.

Or you could weld your own with about $6 worth of hardware cloth and sheet metal. Just a thought.

I think you could probably order one from Land Rover for a DII also as the new Kalahari seems to have the black wire mesh grill in it.

I agree with Jason, I have a 95 D1, it ran hot. I had a split cooling tank and a couple of hoses, true they where old but the truck running hot didn't help. I had the radiator power flushed, not a back yard pour in the bottle flush, but done by a professional. I changed my t-stat and had my AC recharged. I live in SLC and in UT we have nice big hills while using AC at full blast. After the flush and t-stat my temp gauge went down by a quarter, also the AC ran much cooler after the recharge. I have an ARB and IPF lights in front of my radiator. I read on this board about people having clogged radiators at about 100k. Mine was at about 95k, I was lucky it could be cleaned out and all was good. Check your cooling system. If you haven't already, remove the airdam and trim the bumper, that too would open up the front end for more cooling.

I put the saudi grill on mine and my temp didnt move any lower. Its been solid at the bottom third, but I guess thats low enough. I just wonder why all Discos dont come with that type grill. Since they dont get as much rain or snow/ice as we do here, maybe the design of the standard grill keeps ice off the fans? I'm just talking out of my a@@ here, so if anyone knows, chirp in.

I just got back from 4-wheeling in Moab and AZ(115 degrees). The first day it got hot(open the hood and speed the engine up and it cool down to half mark on the gauge). I went back and pulled the raditor back and the thing was full with mud and grass from wheeling in the Midwest. It look clean from the front, but there was stuff between the A/C and raditor. If you have cooling problems check that first.

Good point Ron! Even easier to check is that at idle at operating temps, the fan off the engine is strong enough to pull enough air through the radiator to turn the electric fans (given they, too, are not running!). Keep us posted if you decide to get the grill...it doesn't look too bad either!

A Bunch of people in the UK simply drill the existing grill full of holes

Are you talking about speed holes?
