I was in MOAB driving over some easy stuff and heard a loud clunk in the rear. I figured a rock just hit something. I started up an incline and I had no power to the rear and heard lots of clunking. When in drive, my rear drive shaft was spinning but not the tires! I removed the rear drive shaft and drove out. My guess is a broken half shaft in the rear. Any ideas? If it is my axle, where can I get an inexpensive replacement? Thanks for the 1000th time. James |

James, Sounds like you blew your rear Diff. I had this happen to me in the j**p I used to own before I got my Disco. The sound you describe is the exact same sound I heard. It all started with a big loud BANG in the rear and then Clunk Clunk Clunk. The Fked up thing was in a parking lot and all i did was turn start the J**P. My mechanic said the gears in the diff where most likley worn and due to the wear they meshed tooth to tooth and BAAAM!!!. I do believe I had to replace my axle shafts as well due to some damage. |

Thanks. Jeff, did the noise go away or stay the same. After the initial clunk, the noise only lasted for a mile or two and now everything sounds fine. Replacing a diff sounds worse then a broken half shaft. What are the signs of a broken half shaft vs. broken diff? THanks |

James, if you have a Disco I, be glad. It's really easy to check the half-shafts versus a DII. . Buy new rear half-shaft seals/gaskets . Loosen both rear wheels' bolts, . raise the rear of the vehicle on stands . remove the wheels . chock the opposite wheel, remove the five bolts and pull it out. . do the same to the other side. If you need a stock rear diff or stock half-shafts, I have both from when I upgraded last year. Javier |

No sure how long the clunk would have lasted. I called AAA and had it roll backed to my mechanic. I guess if i`d have driven it it may have gon away as the gears droped. It would have ran i imagine with just the front 2 wheels since the diff was ok, but i didn`t try it. |

Thank you all again. I'll pull them out tomorrow and hope they are fine. Then, I'll know I have to get a locker for the rear LOL. |

as long as you are doing the work you probably should upgrade.. there is a reason the rover axles break..its pretty much because they suck compared to what is available and what is stock on other trucks... give bill at great basin rovers a call before you do anything with future parts.. i was just in a discussion about diff locks and recommend gbr to anybody with problems or questions relating to drive line issues. i'm just really happy with their service.. |
