Hi Gang, I have an air conditioning problem with my 96' Disco. Some times it works, some times it doesn't. This is not the problem of the fan turning off where you have to jiggle the switch. The fan works fine, but sometimes the air doesn't come out cold. Then all of a sudden it comes out ice cold . I popped the hood and when the air is coming out warm, the electric clutch on the compressor is not engaged. When the clutch kicks in and the compressor is spinning the air comes out cold. I haven't checked the voltage going to it yet. anyone know what I should check for?Could it be a relay?? Can I replace just the clutch? The compressor seems to work fine. |

If your gas charge in your AC system is getting low the compressor will *SHORT CYCLE*. This is where the compressor will kick on and off continuosly. It may run for 10 minuts and then cut off for 5 minutes then kick on again. What happens is a safty or a internal load sensor detects either a high Head pressure, low suction pressure or the internal load sensor setects to much pressure in the compressor and shuts off until it either A)times out or B)detects the pressures are back to normal. This can be caused from low charge in the system, Dirty Evaporator or condensor coils, dirty filter or a clogged Filter dryer. These are the common causes for a AC system to short cycle and i imagine a car or trucks AC system is no diffrent as its all about basic refridgeration. hope this may help!! |

But check the electrical ststem as it could be a faulty or loose wire somewhere causeing it to kick in then out. Not sure what the electrical diagram looks like for a Discos AC system but if theres a Relay somewhere in there i`d check that as it could be crapping out. |

Now the clutch just won't come on at all, so I don't think its low pressure. |

I hot wired the clutch and it works. The 30 amp fuse under the hood looks good. The switch on the dash lights up when turned on and I can here fans kick on when it is pressed, so I think the switch is good. Is there a relay??? |

Shit man , I forgot all about this way down here. For starters Brian get a test light or a volt meter and start at the clutch with the AC running. Intrude the hot wire going to the clutch and see if the voltage is dropping out when the clutch quits. If it is dropping out work your way back to the cycling switches. The high switch will be in the small line and the low switch will be in the big line (Suction side). Check to see if the feed is dropping to the switch or if its dropping at the switch. if its blowing cold when its working I am inclined to believe that its not low (Although anything is possible) Do the fans drop out along with the clutch ?
