Hey folks, On my way home today, I stopped at a stoplight and heard a loud 'clunk.' My ABS , Traction Control and Hill Decent lights came on and they won't shut off. I've tried driving the Disco in reverse (like I used to do to get my abs sensor to work in my 97 DI), put it in low, drove it, put it in high, drove it, forward & backwards - no good. It does seem to take a bit longer than normal to break as well. I called my dealership (LR Richmond), but service is closed today (Sat) and they couldn't offer any help. Does anyone have any ideas?? If not, I guess I'll be making a trip to the dealership on Monday. Thanks in advance! -Tommy |

I had the same symptoms, but no clunk. It seems that when I took my truck in for it's recall on the ABS computer, they put in the wrong chip, and it kept looking for SLS. When, after a few weeks it still couldn't find the SLS components, it declared itself broken, and light up the HDC, ABS and TC lights. |

There was a SLABS recall that affects SLS, ABS, ETC and HDC but I don't think that would cause a clunk sound. Eric, I could be wrong and I don't have my service manual with me right now but I really don't think there is a different SLABS unit for SLS vs. NON-SLS Discos. It's just turned on or off with Testbook. |

Perhaps. It could have been a different chip, or just a software flag, but it was looking for it, and that's what caused the error state. |

Eric, Thanks for your note. I had my recall work done on March 19, 2002 - which was right after they announced the recall. How long after your recall work did you get the errors? (It's been almost 3.5 mos for me.) Thanks! -Tommy |

Mine took a few weeks (don't know exactly) but long enough that I don't think it was a pre-programmed amount of time. I think it probably has more to do with how many times the computer tried to ask SLS to do something, and not get a response. My dealer fixed the problem within a day, and at no cost, since the problem was in how they performed the recall work. |

Tommy, A week after I took my '00 disco II in for recall on the abs sensor the same thing happened. The said they were having problems with the chips they installed. About three weeks after that it happened again. They said it was the same problem, so they replaces everything again. It has been about a month now and knock on wood, it has not happened again. It should be taken care of under recall/waranty. Take care, Mitch |
