There are three different components placed in your exhaust system. First, just after the exhaust manifold, are the cats. There is one on each side welded in the Y pipe. Next, sitting roughly in the center of your vehicle is your muffler. Finally, near the end of your exhaust system is your resonator. Your cats can rattle when they wear out. They are supposed to last over 80K miles here in the US. Your muffler can rattle for a number of reasons, but I'd check the heat shield that sits on top. The mounts tend to rust and break. This allows it to make the load racket that you describe. I'd crawl under the vehicle while it is making the noise. It should be pretty easy to spot the source. Good luck! Mike B. |

I just had my muffler (middle of vehicle) and resonator (rear driver side) swapped out for a stainless muffler and glass-pack where the resonator used to be. I didn't have the money for a Borla system, and wanted to be very close to stock sound going into the replacement. I got the muffler for $95 (installed) and the resonator replacement for $125 (installed) at Midas. They replaced the tailpipe with one that looks just like the stocker, but tucked it all up further inside the rear quarter panel with only a little wiggle (vibration) room for a better departure angle. Their components are covered by a lifetime warranty (FWIW!). Both baffles and the heatsheild on the resonator had broken and rusted, causing a terrible rattle especially during idle. Unfortunately, my cats are not bad - I was hoping to have the dealer swap them before I turn 80K on the clock! Cheers, e |

In my experience, you don't need to have the truck running to sort out what's rattling. Just slip under and tap the muffler and resonator with the toe of your shoe, and the rattle should be pretty apparent - it was in my case! Rattling cats are a different story, mine are still good, so I can't speak from experience. Good luck, e |
