I have a 96 Discovery with 85K miles. I am somewhat worried about the clunking/rough shifting noises that it makes (on occasion) when slowing down into lower gears and when shifting into reverse. I have been told that this is normal when you are slowing down to speeds of less than 20 mph. Does anyone out there experience this? Is it normal or is my transmission on its way out?

Thanks in advance-
Dianne

Dianne , most people think that is all due to the slop between the trans/transfer case but that isnt so and its NOT normal. Alot of times most of it comes from worn diffs.

I am currently experiencing the same symptoms with my 96 Disco with 90k. Shifting into reverse from either "Park" or "Drive" after the driveline is hot seems to make the ker-chunk more pronounced.

I've checked the driveshafts, universal joints and splines for excessive slack and everything seems okay. I also assumed, like others, the noise was a result of excessive slop between the trans/transfer but now I am not so sure.

Both the front and rear diff (which is new) seem to work fine without any strange noises or vibrations. All signs as far as I can tell point to the transfer box as the primary culprit.

Any information anyone may have on a possible cause and/or solution will be most appreciated as I am in no hurry to be taken to the cleaners by a dealer whose first inclination would be to replace the entire driveline.

Hi Craig-
That sounds exactly like what I am experiencing. When the engine is cold and I shift into reverse, I do not hear the "ker-chunk".

Did you replace your front and rear differentials trying to troubleshoot this problem?

Kyle and Dianne,

My Disco has EXACTLY the same problem - only clunk when it is warm. I spent a lot of time investigating it. I evne took out the transfer case and inspected it, and found out the transfer is still perfect.

The front and rear diffs have about 15-20 degrees of slack on them. I don't know whether this is the cause, because it ONLY happens when the truck is slowed down and is warm. I am wondering whether it can be the governor for the transmission also.

Any pointer will be greatly apprecited.

Vincent and Craig,
How long have you been experiencing this problem? We are planning on changing the transfer case & diff. fluids this weekend. Any idea if that might help at all?

It certainly won't hurt. How long since the last gear oil change? Put an old strainer over the drain pan when you pull the drain plug and inspect the strainer and old oil.

I don't think the clunking necessarily indicates a major problem. Like Kyle said, clunking may indicate worn diffs. You have 85-90k miles? Your have worn diffs.

Dianne,

I had the rear diff rebuilt due to an unrelated problem about four months ago. I've been hearing the ker-chunck noise for about a year. It doesn't seem to be getting any worse. I guess whatever is out of tolerance is worn to the point where it will make the same noise regardless of the number of miles I put on the vehicle.

As far as troubleshooting goes, I've replaced all of the driveline fluids with Mobil 1 Synthetic and the roto-flex on the rear driveshaft. I've checked differential flanges for excessive lateral movement of which there isn't any. There was however, some minimal lateral movement at the front flange of the transfer box where I am told due to the ball bearing design you could expect some free-play.

The previous owner of my Disco was a little less than thourogh when it came to driveline maintence. Perhaps I can blame him?

Overall, drivability remains good no strange noises or excessive vibrations. Surely, some Land Rover professionals out there read these posts and have opinions on the matter.

If you want to rule out the Differentials/U-Joints, lock the center differential, and set the parking brake. This will stop movement of transfer case outputs, and if you still here the clunk when shifting, it is the interface between the transmissions output adapter shaft, and the main gear of the transfer box. This is quite common, especially if the truck is not fitted with the updated, cross drilled main gear in the transfer case. These begin to be fitted by the factory in 97, and there was a TSB on them in mid 1996.

Vincent and Craig,
Have you tried the troubleshoot in the previous msg?

I've got the "ker-chunk" too. Nothing seems loose and I've been advised to not worry about it. Mine has 105k on 95 Disco and you know it's worn but Transmission shop buddy says "the truck may outlive both of us".

I have this also and heard it is perfectly normal.

Mine does it (111k), I changed all the fluids to synthetic except for the •••••• (dino) and it still does it. Also experimented with Lucas oil additives which quited the T-Case but still the 'cher-chunk' noise(s). I just accept the sounds and will see how it holds up.

The Clunk as you slow down from hi speed to say a toll booth etc is the gearbox changing down around 20 mph. FWIW very common.
The clunk when going from drive to R or vica versa -
1: try just before truck stops (last few inches) taking truck out of R or P and into neutral. This releases the torque pressure. Once stopped select P or R
2: when parking, move truck to neutral, apply hand (e) brake, move shifter to P. I also stop engine while shifter is in N to ensure that all the pressure inside the box is released
