I am about to buy a 96 Disco with 70k miles. Are there any major mechanical issues I should be aware of?

I read something about 96's and known failure of the Intake Manifold Gasket.

Hello there,
I've got a '96 SE with 110k. Only problem not caused by me was a bad master cylinder, about 200 bucks. It runs like a champ, doesn't use oil, or leak engine oil. It does have a leaky swivel seal in the front which seemed to get very bad then cleared up almost completely. Most common problem I would think is the cruise control being non functional due to bad or loose vaccuum hoses(easy fix). Definitely go for it!

I have a friend that has a 96 Disco with around 165k only work that has been done was the power steering pump...

I've done the fuel pump at 90k and both front door window regulators.
Just make sure the previous owners have changed the oil every 3-4 k. Very important on these engines because of old oil residue causing oil passage blockage.
Depending on your price, it's alot a car for the money.

Keither there are all sorts of issues that might come up with a used '96. At that age O2 and ABS sensors start failng. You can expect any number of the secondary components to need replacing in the near future, such as alternator, waterpump, fuelpump, power steering box etc. As Robert mentions, there will be seeping fluids and some leaks underneath, some of which you can live with while others are costly to address. If the engine has been well maintained that is a plus, but these earlier models have a history of bad valves. Mine were replaced at 17K and who knows when they will need addressing again. Also expect more pain in the ass (expensive) stuff like a failing rear view mirror, window ecu, door actuator, dimmer rheostat. And of course, if someone has wheeled the Disco aggressively, those weak stock diffs might soon have issues.

I don't mean to scare you away from a '96 or a Disco in general, but some need a lot of attention. Get the Vin # and call or visit the dealer so you can look at the vehicles history.

Even though I've had quite a bit of maintenance on my '96, I love it and feel very confident that it will get me to my destination. It has never left me stranded nor stood idle with an undiagnosed problem :)

Good points Moe,
definitely run the vin# at the dealer, as well as carfax.com, and make sure you are not getting a 10k piece of crap. Same as Moe, my Disco has never left me stranded with the exception of when I sliced a brake line miles back on a trail. That was not a good day. This is definitely not a site you want to see more than once in a blue moonSad Rover
