Got home today from week long trip and battery is dead on my '01 D2. Now I cant get the hood open to jump the battery. Any suggestions to manually open hood ? Thanks

Katrina,

Manually opening the hood is the only way to open, unless I am misunderstanding your question.

After pulling the manual hood release located in the cabin, did you move / push the 2nd release mechanism? Lift your hood about an inch and look underneath, you should see the yellow tab which is located under the "R" in Rover.

What I think she's talking about is a very common problem with D2's. The cable may be streched too far and you can't pull the release. If that's the case you need to get a set of pliers to grab hold of the cable and pull hard. The dealer should replace the cable for you.

Al,

I was a little curious about that. But that D2 is an '01. That's pretty new to be having that type of problem. IMHO...

My '99 D2 had that problem after 12 months. A buddy of mine had the same thing happen to his '00 after about 18 months. I thought they fixed the problem after the 2000MY but maybe not.

Pulling the cable with pliers did not work for me / Clarances car. He had to go to the dealer, who used a can opener or something.

Yes I tried the old pull w/ pliers and the cable is now broken. Any other ideas ? I hate to have it towed because battery is dead and hood wont open....... Thanks

maybe installing some quick release pins NASCAR style will work. yeah......that would be sweet.
but then you will have to weld the doors shut and pull a Bo and Luke Duke all the time.

nice. :)

ps: where did the cable break? the handle?

Katrina,

I have a 2000 DSII that had the hood release cable fail one month into ownership...and again some months later. Both times the cable was replaced under the new vehicle warranty.

USE THE NEW VEHICLE WARRANTY. You have 24HR/365 days a year Land Rover Recover Service @ 1-800-444-3700...though your results may vary. Make them come to you to resolve the problem.

I do wonder about a fairly new battery being dead after sitting for only one week. Perhaps an interior light was left on? Do check for a "leak".

I had a similar problem. The hood would pop but it would not unlatch. After messing with it for a while I got it to open. The catch needed to be adjusted to one side. I think it took a 10mm socket to loosen the two nuts. Knock on wood, I have not had to mess with it again. Good luck...Dave

Same happened here. I disconnected the cable from the lever under the dash and attached the cable to a slotted piece of wood that I pulled on to open the hood. Pliers are a bit harsh and could break the cable.
When they designed the car they did not make it easy to replace this cable. It is sealed behind rivetted panels which need to be drilled out to gain access to the old cable. Not a simple task and your car comes back having been drilled and screwed to put it back together again. They had mine for a whole day to do the job.
