It's pretty apparent that a CDL will be offered in the IIa's. Any inside sources as to when CDL equipped vehicles will be available in the US? |

I discussed this issue with a salesman at the dealer last week. None of their 03 Discos have the CDL, they can't find an add option anywhere on their order sheets, and can't get an answer from LRNA either. I guess everyone is scratching their heads. |

My dealer just received (19) 2003 Discoveries today. I stopped in to have a look and started talking with one of the LR employees. He said that all of the Discos already have CDL, and that it gets engaged automatically when low range is selected. I checked the hi/lo lever and it does not allow for manual selection of CDL. I crawled under one of the new Discos to see if anything was actually connected to the CDL nut. There were two cables running in the general direction, but a salesman came up before I could get my hand up on top of the transfer case to see what the cables connected to. So, I couldn't verify that CDL is engaged with low range, but I'll try and take a test drive in one later this week where I can check it out for myself. FYI, the '03 CDL is *not* engaged automatically when in low-range. Quoting from the recently updated for '03 DSII service manual:
Quote:On vehicle fitted with a differential lock, the high/low range selector lever as fitted on previous models also incorporates the differential lock selector on vehicles from 03 model year. The lever can be moved forwards or backwards to select high, neutral or low range or sideways to select differential lock engaged or disengaged, on vehicles with differential lock fitted.

I have to agree with RON. Early on there where reports stateing that the USA market would not see the CDL in the DIIa and the DIII`s. I take it that they did this because not many Disco owners ever USED the CDL or knew what it was for. Lets face it most people who own Discos don`t go offroad. I mean how many times have you seen a person post here that they bought a used D1 and the CDL is locked up and siezed due to it never being used. I`ll even bet most Disco`s never even see LOW gear. |

Well... with that mentality BMW, MB, and Porsche should stop making cars that can go over 75mph. And that BMW's Motorsport division and all those wonderful M cars shouldn't be sold in the US. And according to BMWNA there was no market in the US for M Cars. But when a few very determined people made enough noise and even imported some on their own it was shown that the M cars could sell VERY well here in the land of the 55mph speed limit and clueless drivers. I wonder what "could" happen if LR could just improve reliability and keep the design of the D90 and D110 and sell it to the niche market here in the US. People don't buy Land Rover because they drive bad. People buy them because of their reputation off road but hold back because of the reputation in the shop. |

Yea, i heard the same rumor that CDL came on when shifted into low range, but when i got my 03 disco home today, i put it in low range and the light didnt come one(if its even there anymore) i will examine it closer tommorow and figure out if it is lockable. Will |

AL, Compareing the Speed of a car to a CDL is like compareing a shoebox to an apple. I`m just stateing a fact. Most Disco owners or for that fact most 4x4 owners never take there trucks off road. If they did don`t you think that most of the other companies would build 4x4`s with CDLS. Most people i know that own the 4x4 trucks includeing Discos use them to pull campers, boats or whatever and the other half have them because the like them. I`m sure most here on D-Web will agree that theres only a small percentage of people that use there truck for what they where intended for originaly. Also you must relize that most Americans are LAZY (no offence i`m American myself) and if they have to turn a knob, or go out of there way to engauge something they wont. I htink thats why LR came up with ETC. This way the truck responds for you with out you haveing to lift a finger and this may be why LR has dropped the CDL linkage and went with a push button control for the CDL in Europe. I mean come on look at what the TV REMOTE and Remote Door openers have done. SHIT people expect that shit to be standard now-a-days. Just trying to say that this is how big buisness thinks. Yea I wish I could have a CDL in my D2 and yes i htink they should be an option in the states. But like you said maybe if enough of us jump up and down they will return as an option in the future. I just hope they don`t give us a shitty mock up of the DEFENDERS when the come back to the states(rumor is they are redesigning the Defender class for 2005). |

and the sad thing is seeing all the hyped up advertising regarding the vehicles as being so "capable" offroad. And sometimes, they go out to show the world what ABC, XYZ can do and fall flat on their face. |

The comparison I was trying to make is that those are both niche markets. An M3 is a niche car. VERY few people buy one and actually uses it for what it was made for. Even if they tried chances are they have no idea they know how to use it. There are people who will buy an M Roadster, M3 or M5 and actually use it but very few. Most M3 convertible drivers are women with long nails who drive the car to get their hair done. They have no idea what a limited slip rear differential or SMG transmission is. They don't care. Just like Rovers. But the M3 is still a HUGE money maker for BMW and that's what I'm trying to say. That there is a market for this stuff. Even if people don't use it or know how to use it. The few who do will give the car a reputation that causes others (the wanna-be's) to want it too. If the car is just a poser like the Prowler then it will die a quick quiet death. EVERY one I have talked to thinks a Rover will walk on water and want one but think the build quality sucks. There is money in the mass market but there are also 100's of choices there. The CDL is just a little piece of the D2 that turns it from (IMO) a poser to a real tool. Without the CDL the D2 would die a quick quiet death. Not as quick as say the Freelander but still. After installing the CDL in my D2 I was even more pissed that they chose not to make it a standard item. It is really the best mod you can do to your car. The LR community in the US isn't as organized as the BMW community so the few have to make lots of noise and buy the options that we want to see more of. Then maybe we'll get what we want. I'm getting off my soapbox now. Hopefully someone at Ford is reading this board. Anyway I should go to sleep since I've been known to say crap when I'm sleepy |

Chu, Yea I must AGREE 100%. The commercials that kill me are the ones for the X-Terras. Not sure what thread it was posted on but awhile back some one posted some X-Terra off road footage. There where some dudes wheeling in an inch of snow and the damn trucks hardly made it any where with out spinning wheels or slipping around. BUT on the commercials they show the X-Terras whoomping around in the desert, up big ass rock strewn mountians, and forgeing through some deep ass snow. Its all HYPE....HYPE = Bull Shit hehehe. Look at how LR promotes the Freelander.. Christ they make it out to be a Super Defender or something and people not knowing any better buy them thinking they can trek acros a african desert or a South American Jungle eheh. I`ll be honest, I was wheeling in Green Ridge in wester MD. and found some steep, narrow and loose rocky trails. I had a blast going up but then i seen a dude and his girl friend in a GEO TRACKER comming my way. First they almost went off the side of the Ridge to avoid me when i clearly told them i`ll back up onto the side of the ridge. Then i waved him over and warned him of the narrow rocky shit ahead. He laughed and said well you made it So can I...The Trackers do it in the comercials don`t they and off he went. Not sure if he made it or not. But if he did i imagine his front end was way out and he had to have tore up shit under his Tracker (dude had like 4 inches of clearance at best). |

AL, I wish I could fit the CDL to my 2002 D2 but I can`t. Good news is that my T-Box whines like a bitch and they will replace it at my 7500 mile check up. I`m gonna ask them to fit it with a older 2000 or 2001 T-Box with the CDL stubb (I hope they will). From what i have heard they didn`t make to many of the NON-STUBB T-Boxes. I hope tihs is true. Oh and Sorry about the misunderstanding. |

look in the 03 owners manual, around page 127 i think. theres the cdl, it functions just as it used to on the D1s, and no, the 03 do not have a cdl, auto-locking or not. if you look at you tbox shifter, youll notice that it is off to the right like the old d1 levers, you just cant move it to the left..yet |

Yeah, we get these folks here with big yellow rovers who keep adding mods to their trucks, but how many times do you think they see dirt? Jeff, the funny thing is that LR is the same way. I don't know about the rest of you, but when I took my truck offroad, I was damn disappointed/embarassed the first few times. Much of it was driving, but the truck didn't carry me either. When I hit the track with an M3, it makes me look like a good driver even though we know the truth, but my disco just didn't have the same effect. |

I'm not a rocket scientist, but if the newer versions of the Disco use the ABS hydraulics to balance the torque to the wheels with traction... perhaps a locking differential would screw up that system. Perhaps the lever which engages the lock turns off the traction control at the same time. If so, which system is better off road? Open differential with traction control? Or- locked center differential with no traction control? I guess it depends on how much steering control you would like to have? Eric |

Eric, the ETC and CDL can work together and do. When you use them together it's "almost" like having a CDL with rear locker. It's VERY useful. The ETC alone is easy to overcome in many situations but it will work in other situations like when your axles get crossed. But if the same thing happens up hill you need both the CDL and ETC. Think of ETC as a poor mans limited slip differential and you get the idea of how it works. So a D2 with ETC might be like a D1 with front and rear limited slip diffs. |
