I'm hearing a loud, high-pitched whining noise from the engine at speeds >50mph... almost like
a whistle... anyone ever have anything similar?
Thanks.

Is it coming from the engine or the center console?

Is it speed-variable or throttle position variable?

How about it's relationship to the transmission?

It may be transfer case whine.

Tough to tell engine v console because its so high pitched.... not related to the throttle, but it does drop off as the speed drops off. Transfer case whine may be it... common problem?
Thanks.

Has it been doing this for as long as you've owned the truck?

I have found that Discoveries are somewhat prone to transfer case whine, as I learned in my 2001, which was my first Rover.

It really never bothered me until I installed my Disco 1 CDL linkage.

If it's really loud, consider taking it in to your dealership and having them take a listen.

Check idler, alternator and water pump bearings also. There was a DII recall for idler pulley bearings.

John,

"anyone ever have anything similar?"

Yes. We have an '01 DSII. It was transfer case whine. Yes, it is common enough. My dealership insisted on replacing my transfer case. (Don't know how common that is though). If you plan on doing a lot of offroading with your Discovery, here is a suggestion: (FWIW, just my .000134 cents, :)) If your dealership determines it is T Case whine, and if they are amenable, ask them if they can replace your T case with one for a 2000 or early '01 model. That way you can modify it in order to lock the center diff if you so desire. ... Just a thought.

Kim :)

Thanks.

I've only had it a couple of weeks, and of course didn't notice the sound when I test drove it. :-) I'll take it to the dealership and see what they say... thanks for all the comments.

I almost forgot until reading this but my 1999 D2 did have a whistle that was caused by wind noise. It was subtle and came from the back. I never did much with it since it was one of those sounds that went away as long as the music was playing. And adding the roof rack added a whole new range of noises. :)

Funny you mention that. About 1 year ago I test drove a brand new DII (2002) and the one thing that I noticed above all else was a high pitched whinning noise when I went over 50 mph. I just assumed they all did that.
