Folks, I am hoping someone might have an idea on what this might be before I take my 98 Disco I down to the dealership. At medium to high speeds 30mph to 70mph, I hear an intermittant rumble/knocking sound. It's real faint, but loud enough to hear it with the radio on and windows rolled up. It doesn't start until about 15 minutes of driving, and seems to make the noise more so when I accelerate or decelerate. BTW my rover is an automatic and I got about 73K miles on it. Any suggestions? Thanks, Chris Z |

I have no idea what rotoflex is, so I don't believe I have it. Chris Z |

doubt you do with a 98. Roto is a rubber coupling on rear driveshaft. When they start to go bad, you get a bit of a rumble. Can you feel the rumble, like it may be tires (rear) out of balance? |

The sound it makes has a distinct metal bumping metal sound, but faint. I can not localize the sound, but I got under the hood, and bottomside and checked for loose things and could not find anything. The best way to describe the sound is, when my disco was new, I took the tire jack out of the engine compartment, because the velcro straps were loosening with wear. Vibrations from the road would cause the jack to rattle in the engine compartment. It's like that noise except it seems to come from the back end or the underside. Thanks, Chris Z |

Just a few guesses here. 1) Loose rear sway bar 2)Loose exhaust pipe/clamp or muffler |

Upon closer inspection on the engine compartment last night, and after reading my own post I may have found the elusive knocking sound. It would seem that when I removed the jack a couple of years ago, I left the bracket in place. The knob that locks the bracket in place had popped loose letting the bracket rest freely in place. After driving good ol' Rovey this morning I did not notice the rumble. Over the next few days I will keep a listen. I appreciate everyones suggestions. Without them I would not have been so dilligent to find the source of the noise myself. I have a feeling that would have been a $500.00 trip to the dealership to replace the "Johnson Spring" or the "Reticulated Snorkel Nut", if you know what I mean Thanks again, Chris Z |
