I am thinking of buying a Hannibal tent and would like to look at one. I will drive anywhere in the Bay Area. Thanks! P.S. It would also be an opportunity for you to check out a very non-stock truck (3" lift, lockers, lights, winch, etc.). |

No offence but I have looked at the Technitop and didn't think it was very heavy duty. I am deciding between the Hannibal and the Maggiolina. The Maggiolina line is very heavy duty and well made, I have not seen the Hannibal. |

Hey Mike, I've been kicking around the rooftop tent idea as well. Do you have some feedback on any of these other tents: Eezi-Awn Overcamp Howling Moon Bedouin Echo It seems they are all close in style, but I've never seen a rooftop tent in person, so I don't really know what to look for. |

Yes Grady, Eezi-Awn; this looks like the Hannibal but I like the rain fly on the Hannibal. I think the price is about the same. Overcamp; I have only seen photos but this is made by the same people that make the Maggiolina which I have seen and it's very well made. Overcamp is their folding tent but it folds the long way. I am considering this one. Howling Moon; Don't know this one well, the fly does not cover much. Bedouin; Also a Hannibal like tent, not sure of quality. Echo; Not sure of quality and I'm not sure if this fabric breathes. With Kyle buzzing around I'm surprised all the other horse flies haven't landed and posted all their CB whining about how a $20. K-Mart tent on the roof is just as good. Maybe Martha Stewart makes a pink one. Here are some links, so far I am thinking Hannibal or a Maggiolina product. http://www.roveraccessories.com/hannibal2.htm http://www.offroadstore.co.uk/acatalog/hannibal.htm http://www.loftyshelters.com/IdeaFrame.htm http://www.jurgensci.co.za/howlingmoon/Rooftoptents.htm http://www.4wdworld.com.au/products/rooftoptents/index.htm http://www.lenad.co.za/echo/products.htm#The%20Echo%20Rooftop%20tents http://www.bimo.com/skydome1.htm (here is a home made one, check out that Home Depot ladder!) |

Mike, If you end up getting a type like the Hannibal, Which rack are you going to use with it? Which size tent are you looking to get? The 1.2 or 1.4? Have you been getting any price quotes on some of these tents? (Other than $16)! |

it's not kyle.. ew. it's a woman. two people up there is a very tight thing. so make sure you like them or leave the door open so feet can stick out. if i still had the truck i would consider making a 2/3 scale paper mache model of kyle (escape from alcatraz style) and posing him up there for you mike. it just wouldn't be the same if the muppet didn't insult and belitle people while praising itself for reinventing the wheel..hmm, i think axel could help me out with the some spare audio. rd |

Now that would sell big, a Kyle version of the Charlie Mc Carthy doll. It could swear at people on the trail and tell them what they are doing wrong. Just pull the string and you know what it's going to say. Just like the real thing! I think it would cost a bit much to make a doll with a vocabulary as rounded as Kyles. I have never seen a doll with twenty five words (mostly profanity). Maybe Disco Web could just sell a Kyle head like jack-in-the-box sells for your antenna. He is the D-Web mascot after all. Grady, I have a Brown Church of London (full heavy duty rack) it's 4'6" wide and I will put the tent on top so it can hang over. I need a big tent for two so I expect to pay a bit more than $16. It's not that I just want to camp on my roof, but if you have ever used one of these you know how fast they go up. Much stronger in the wind, no trenching in the rain etc.. If you are camping in a different place every night this is the way to go. |

Mike, I have slept in all the others you mention, we import the Technitop because we think it last the longest, best quality, best features. As you might know we do Safaris in Africa a few times a year. I could tell you a few things off line about the others but because I am involved with the Technitop I won't....I grew up with rooftop tents in Africa, they have evolved.. Have you seen a Technitop close up? Practical features that are better is the issue, I know of a Technitop that has been used for 5 years now and gets opened about 300 times a year, still going strong. Beware of fibreglass, over time it sag's. That is why the later model Technitops are now a double sided plastic roto moulding. I have a client going on this years B2B trek that is using his new Technitop, I guess he can comment on it after the trip. e-mail me and we can discuss pro's and con's. Also I have lots of close up pictures. |

I can't understand why anyone would want to sleep up there. I could see if you were trying to keep clear of the tigers but come on! It's got to be e bitch climbing up there and turning around. Not to mention a pain in the ass setting up the tent and all your gear. Why not put a tent on the ground so you can have a little more room. The last time I went camping I had to get up and piss at least 4 times from all the beer I drank. Anyone who would go through all the trouble of camping on their roof is a POSER!! |

I too have been thinking about getting a roof tent. When I had my recently sold Pinzgauer, I would just put the seats down in the back, air up the air mattress and viola! Instant camper. My wife enjoyed the canvas support bars on the roof of the pinzi. hehehe. (they are good to hang the battery powered lantern on) I requested a loftyshelters catalog, and got it in last night. I like the magiolina, but don't like the price. If there is anyone in the Indiana area that has a roof tent that I could check out, I would appreciate it. Neal, Let me explain, for one, you leave all sleeping bags, bedding and pillows inside when you close the tent. It already has a mattress inside. So you stop, open and get in, this all in under 2 minutes. Secondly, no tent poles and tent pegs need to be driven into the ground. You need not worry about getting all the rocks out the way before you pitch the tent, you need not worry about water at night running through the camp / tent. More room inside the vehicle for other more important stuff, like a fridge, remember all your bedding, mattress and tent is on the roof, ready to go. You can leave a lot of personal stuff in the tent, you know, the stuff that comes in handy at night... Yes it is a pain getting up and down, but for me an ever bigger pain is getting up from the ground, opening a zipper and then walking onto cold dirty sand to take a leak. Now I simply open the tent get on the ladder and if I feel like it take a leak. Or you could get your shoes on while up there, and then get down.... No wet dirty tent groundsheet to deal with in the morning, most tents get wet from condensation underneath through the night, our product does not as it has a double skinned well insulated base. Yes you do sleep up on the roof to get away from bugs, snakes etc, after all if you do not camp in the wild you are a poser!!! BTW any cat or bear will get you up there if you have food in your tent. More important in Africa it keeps the Hyenas away. In conclution you have to sleep in one to appreciate sleeping on the roof. Once you do you will never choose a normal tent again, unless you plan on staying at the same spot for a week. |

I can see you point if you are using a system that is designed for the roof, sets up quickly and unfolds to an area larger than the roof rack. I still think that if you were using a tent that only covered the roof rack area that it would be a pain- IE Rob's example. |

Yes, but look at the fly on the Hannibal, much better; http://www.roveraccessories.com/han_tentd905_L.jpg. Also, the Maggiolina line (including the overcamp) have a full storm cover for Arctic travel or sand storms. Willie, Rumor has it that you are looking into selling the Maggiolina line. Very nice stuff. |

Well if its no wider then the truck its really too damn small for two people unless you are a midgett... One person its a freaking palace , two people its a night in hell. Also , it kills your rack and all the racks that support the tents look like , , , , , well , they look like SHIT!.. When its all opened up and you are ohhhhing ahhhhhhing over them I think you forget how much of the vehicle you have rendered useless and just how damn ugly you have made it.. Kyle |

Kyle, Now you are getting a bit constructive in your criticism. Your point has been my big reservation about the rooftop tent. The Over Camp fits down the side of the rack and folds 50% off the side (http://www.loftyshelters.com/Gallery%20Folder/Gallery%20Images/Land%20Rover/Camping%20in%20Morocco.jpg ). It's also 6ft wide (king) so it's big enough for two guys that don't hold hands! It would fit me and my wife plus our two small boys.I will have about half the rack free and the rest of the junk will go in my little Rover trailer. Mike |

What is the load rating of a Disco roof gutter again? I would never sleep on the roof of my Disco. My fat ass would probably bend the gutters right over or maybe even worse... I'll stick with the ground tents.. |

"One person its a freaking palace, two people its a night in hell." - Oh, s***, that sounds like sleeping for two in a twin-size bed! I prefer the couch when the missus is tossing and turning in our queen - forget about camping with a hunting buddy in those cramped conditions. I just bought a cheap-ass tent to try out on my roof rack. It'll be folded up onto the rear portion and open to cover the front. Still displaces all the stuff (lightweight personal effects and two jerry cans) every time you want to use it though! I'll have to see how much of a pia it is before making a habit out of using it in place of my ground tent - the Kelty Taj Mahal with 7 bedrooms, lavatory and pantry! LOL I've got to find a way to abbreviate my camping supplies! Cheers, e |

We have been shopping for the past year for a roof top tent. A poser Neal? Naw. I can speak from my experiences: In the desert, I never sleep on the ground if I can avoid it -- there are just too many crawly, nibbly, stingy, crunchy, and slithery creatures that come out at night. For us, the rack does, and the roof tent would, get us off the ground away from the critters, and it gets us (at times) just above the gentle desert morning gusts that kick up dust. Recently, a friend and I were scouting for an old abandoned village in Northern Arizona -- and a roof tent would have been perfect. While there were plenty of level places to park the DSII, there really were no level, flat places to sleep on the ground. But personally, I think the best benefit of all is that each time I sleep up on the rack I am closer to the stars than I am on the ground. I do not think the addition of a roof tent is in the wanna be style -- I think it is an efficient use of space and time with many personal advantages. Michael |

MV, you bring up a good point , but, the price isn't very efficient... i am all for the expensive rooftop tent for many reasons, the most important to me is the coolness factor, a land rover with a tent on the roof, especially a high quality one, is simply cool. it gives you warm fuzzy feeling when you look up at it. i would love to have one, but that price, man.. i just cannot justify that much money for something that doesn't help my truck run better or farther or more reliably. the tent may let the owner get a good nights sleep, reduce compounding fatigue from nights out wheeling hard and drinking harder... the reduction in fatigue might save you a few thousand in body damage because you were alert and cautious.. see how i can justify this stuff, damn. just do it, buy one and enjoy it, who cares if some nerds on the internet dissagree rd |

This rooftop tent debate is a joke. Its no different than any other part on a Disco. (Some types of suspensions work better than others depending on the application). There is no right or wrong, just different. If you are a rock crawler in Moab, this is not the right application. A ground tent at basecamp is better for you. If you are an explorer, where you are traveling and camping for weeks on end, like Safaris, fishing, hunting, surfing trips, than the rooftop tent makes more sense. Its kind of like having a pop top trailer tent that can go anywhere and sets up in less than 5 minutes. As far as size goes, They make them for up to 4 people.

And that is the rub Rob why we never got one. 1400.00 for a roof tent? Dunno about you, but that is simply impossible for us to justify. Especially when everyone in the family wants stuff from Lizzy McGuire style clothes to a puppy farm. So you just roll into camp a little earlier to set your tent, or in the dessert, you let the shorter dude sleep in the back of the DS and the other get the rack. But someday..... |

Mike, not sure where you hear the rumours but I am very happy with selling only the Technitops in North America. I am not at all interested in selling Magionila line of tents, nor any other for that matter. I could very easily bring in all the SA made rooftop tents, I have recently been to them all, taken a tour of all the factories, or barns where some are made... (contact me by e-mail and I will tell you why we do not do the Magiolina) One part is price. BTW, The Easy Awn alutop was pulled from the market a while ago already (once again contact me offline and I will tell you why) Guys, Grady is right, like anything it has different applications for different requirement, roof tents are in two catagories: Two pieces of wood folding on itself and opens with a "dome" tent. This needs a cover to keep it dry and dust free. Enclosed box either fibreglass (like the Magiolina) or plastic (like Technitop) The Technitop opens outwards, creating more headroom and also giving shelter over the door opening without having to rig poles.... Kyle, the mattress size in a Technitop tent is 7' x 4', measure this out on your bed at home and you will see it is not bad. Also By using a roughly 4' x 4'(when closed) rooftent you have half your rack open for expedition stuff. The other issue you have to keep in mind is that with our tent you leave your sleeping bag, pillow etc. in the tent when closing it. Your mattress is already inside, so you have way more room inside your truck for the other stuff. If you pack nicely and use boxes you can get a lot on the roof and inside. The Technitop has a steel frame inside the two skins of the box, so you can still fit a roofrack rail onto the box when closed should you need to carry a Kayak or something. If you build your roofrack with a round bar lying in and covering the full lenght of the gutter you evenly distribute the weight. If you have 500lbs in total on your roof at night you would have less than 40lbs per foot on the gutter with the round bar system. Our tent sets up in under a minute, that means way more time to do other more important things iso of trying to rig a custom tent or ground tent even. Then we look at Money, this is after all what it is all about, the Technitop sells for (Canadian) $1495, I think it is around US$940 and not US$1500 PS. I recently had a client wanting to trade his imported Haniball for a new Technitop...go figure! |
