I removed my rear bumper(D2) and have prepared a grave for that plastic POS.

Of course, the turn signal lights need to be relocated. I tried splicing the turn signal lights into the brake lights. That idea works great until you press on the brakes . . . no more blinking.

I've been driving around town "blinkless" for a week now just waiting for a freakin COP to give me a ticket.

Any advice on the wiring?

I'm planning on putting in some high-power aftermarket replacement backup lights (mounting them to the bumper caps (between the bumber and the collumn) and putting orange lights into the existing reverse light spots, and correcting the wiring for this to work. You're welcome to the idea.

Okay, I'm at work, so I'm going by the SOMP...not necessarily a WAG here:
if the brake light housings have two bulb housings, one for the parking lights and one for the brake lights, you can attempt to rig or replace the brake light bulb holder for a dual-filament bulb and holder. The dual filament bulb and holder will allow you to run a circuit for the brake light and turn signal to seperate filaments of the bulb.
However, if the housing is a single bulb, already using a dual-filament holder (circuit for the parking light and the brake light), then you could maybe fashion something with a seperate bulb holder, or a group of LEDs (wired in series since LEDs often operate at under 2 volts...6 to 8 in series to function off of a 12v source without toasting them).
Oh yeah: SOMP = seat of my pants; WAG = wild a** guess

Isn't this the setup $G uses for their bumpers? Anyone here install a rear $G bumper?

It is the set up that SG uses and will work just fine

I disassembled the rear light housing. Here is the lay out from top to bottom:

Parking/Head-Lights (two bulbs)
Brake Light (one bulb)
Reverse Light (one bulb)

The circuitry from the plug to the seperate bulbs is a flat "aluminum-like plate".

The parking/head-light bulbs share the same "plate".

I think my best option is the parking/head light bulbs. They both share the same circuit and illuminate in both "light" positions.

Since there are no wires from the plug to the bulbs I see no way of isolating one of the bulbs except to cut-away the metal plate that connects to one of the bulb housing.

By the way . . . each bulb housing is a part of the "plate" that runs the length of the board and serves as the ground.

As far as rigging or replacing bulb holders . . . I don't see how you could do this. Are you sure you have seen the circuitry on a D2?

Why do they make these things so complicated now?

U-Haul had a device for connecting a trailer with only a 2 element bulb (tail light and Brake/signal combo light) up to a 3 element bulb system (separate tail, brake, and signal lights). You could treat your current situation as if your wiring was the three element system and your available lights the trailer two element system. I hope that makes sense and I hope it helps.

Ditto on Steve's entry, I have wired up several trailer wiring adapters that take the multiple bulb brake/turn signal setup and converts it to a single multiple element bulb. I am pretty sure the lights on my 95 Disco are 2 element because they light up for running lights and brake.

Here is a couple links

BW, e-mail me offlist and I'll send you the directions for converting your brake lights. I've been running mine for over a year now. When you hit your brakes, you still get turn signals.

Greg,

I've emailed you twice in the last two weeks but I never got a response. That's why I posted this thread. The address I used was:

[email protected]

For some reason, your not getting all of your email. My address is [email protected]. Maybe if I REPLY to one of your emails it will get through. I'm not sure. I have never seen this kind of problem before.

BW, you should have mail. I sent the instructions to you. Strange about my messages. Greg P. has never been successful either, yet I get e-mail all day long. Oh well. Let me know if you don't get it.

DISCO WEB saves the day. Thanks guys. She's wired and blinking her ass off.

Thanks for the email Greg.

BW

Now all I have to do is find a bumper.

I'd like to see that diagram too Greg, would you mind sending it to me, or posting it? ([email protected])

BW-

What are you considering as far as bumper options?

I'll send it to Ho so he can post it in the tech section.

Aw shucks Eric, you're making me blush.

Seriously though, just trying to help others. If it wasn't for D-Web, I wouldn't know crap about this stuff.

That's baloney(sp?). What you've done with your front and rear bumpers, and the re-routing of the exaust on your DII, has been the inspiration for much of my own plans.

I'm just a dumb kid, so if I want to learn something, I either read a book, or find a guru to watch.

Greg,

I noticed that the frequency of the blinking increases when I hit the breaks. Does this happen with you?

BW

I replied to your email. Did you get that one?

Craig,

I have been mulling over this for a long time. I've taken a hard look at the following bumpers.

Trek Outfitters
$-Gard
Mike Aedo(T. Pearson Gallery)
Rockware
TJM (not built yet)
Greg Davis(Gallery)

All of these look pretty good. Trek and $-Gard are too much for my wallet. Aedo built a really good bumper for Tom but is currently not building any right now. Rockware looks like they could build anything I dreamed but I live about two days from their shop. TJM should be coming out with a D2 bumper sometime this year. I expect their product will be of sound quality with a fair price, but I am not so sure they will improve much on the departure angle.

Overall, I think Greg has the best looking bumper with major improvements in the departure angle which is why I ditched the plastic thingy LR calls a bumper. Don't smile to big Greg. I still want to see a photo of you pulling a 5,000lb trailer with that hitch.

If I can find someone locally who can build something similar to Greg's, I'd be happy. For now though, I am going to wait and see what TJM comes up with.

BW, never got your reply, and yes, my signals speed up when I hit my brakes. You eventually get used to it. .

Greg Hren has been towing a tandem axle trailer with a fully modded CJ5 with one of my bumpers with no problems at all. I just don't tow a trailer as much as I used to.

I too would like to have a Greg Davis bumper, but from postings I read earlier, he's too busy installing TTs and other fun stuff for his own Disco. Out of respect for his time, (I know what it's like to be too swamped to enjoy the things I've got) I have refrained from bugging him about it.

I got under my truck with a pair of Vise Grips and channel locks and bent the metal back into place, so it at least LOOKS like it's back to normal, so I think the bumper plans are going to be put on hold.

I am also considering the TJM solution since my bumper timeframe just was extended. If I had incurred body damage, I'd be more pressed to protect those weak rear quarters with something stronger, but I am back to normal now.

Too many options to spend my hard-earned bucks on.
