It seems that so much of the testing of what works off road for Land Rover was gathered during the Camel Trophy event.

Any one out there know what ever became of the event? Or if there are plans to ever do the event again? I mean the real one, off road...

Honda, (yes Honda!) took it over. It went from a great event to a joke overnight.

LRNA is launching Global Challenge next year, starting in the United States. Sixty to eighty countries participating, coast to coast.

LRNA / LRGB had been looking for a replacement, and envisioned TreK as a suitable event - running for several years with dealers / service departments representing in teams of two or three. Some of the guys on this board (and in Northern California Rover Club) participated in the 2000 event.

Camel Trophy is done. Cigarettes, Adventure Lifestyle and Land Rover just didn't mix anymore. I still love the Sandglow paint - I'm a poseur-sucker though!

Cheers,

e

See, that Global Challenge is a good idea. Pure Land Rovering. Anyone know of where to contact them, how to participate?...

Shit looking at the class of people buying the new
RR and DII's it's more likely for them to have a Starbuck trophy challenge or Nordstrom shopping challenge.

Just think with two tone trucks painted coffee bean brown on bottom and frothed milk white on top, it would be so perdddy.

They could even install some of those handy dandy capaccino machines that they sell in the rear of the trucks running on inverters and schedule in coffee breaks every few hours of the challenge.

And, the whole drive would involve blaring one of those C.D.'s that they sell at the counter right next to the cash register..........

Sounds Monumental.......... I'm in.......... raise a mug to the evil empire and off we go :)

ROFLMAO!!!

I can't wait to see the hot java part of the even where each driver carries a cup in the special SBT cup holders without spilling any of it while they hop curbs to get the best parking space. Can't wait to see those 20" allow wheels on the StarBucks Edition Disco and Rangie.

Tweak could be the mascot. :)

Ford has the Eddie Bauer and Nautica themed Exploders, Now introducing the Starbucks Limited edition Disco III picture all the funky design elements found in Starbucks and painted in the color changing paint Columbian bean brown and on the down cast latte froth milky tan.

Or we might see the World Comm corporate edition it's actually worth more after you buy it, Yeah right..

Funny to see the Starbucks Challange course do the LR training runs and not spill and latte on your lap or the optional sude interrior

Or for the Business Professional; You have to drink your venti sized very HOT latte also add a date in your palm pilot and talk on your cell with out the aid of a hands free while you navigate some road obstacles at very high speeds
as usually found on I5

Actually, I just found a picture. Apparently Starbucks has secretly been testing old discos for just such an event.

For anyone having a go at Starbucks, there was a Starbucks ad that got pulled because someone thought it was trading on the 9/11 tragedy. (original posted in General, but.....)

Original Ad

This is what happens when the politically incorrect get hold of the ad and work the old photoshop magic.

Thats a good one. Much more realistic than my little windows paint hurry job. I especially like the attention to detail on the front tag. ;)

So, what is a G4? is that like an apple computer or something?

Reuters: In order to diversify there market dominance Starbucks acquired 50% of LRNA in agreement with Automaker Ford this is the infusion we needed to counter sluggish sales in last 2 years for US market. This business alliance will allow us to offer some very attractive sales incentives. the first fifty thousand customers will be inducted into the new Starbucks LR Presidents club at no charge and receive such benefits as 50% discount off Lattes and all Starbuck merchandise for 5 years or 100k miles. If in the event your vehicle should require service, a shuttle will transport you to the nearest Starbucks for relaxation while you wait for the repairs. And preferred service at all major Starbuck drive through facilities. New and improved Cup holders with warmers and froth attachments will be installed in your vehicle.

As a standard feature all 2003 NAS Range Rovers and option for Discoveries and Freelanders your SUV will be equipped with a Satellite order system the "StarSat" unit will place your latter order to the nearest Starbuck facilities or you and speak to a global Starbucks customer Service Rep directly with the onboard cell service.

Look for the new Starbuck Land Rovers at a Land Rover Dealer near you this fall

Just an interesting side story with regard with the fact that Honda took over the camel trophy races.
My girlfriend and I were out carshopping for her (she was looking at the Honda accord) and we pulled up to the local honda dealership in my 96 discovery. The salesman happened to notice my Camel trophy stickers on the truck and began to inform me that the Honda CRV had replaced Landrover as the truck of choice. He then tried to interest my girlfriend in the purchase of a CRV. He even went as far as citing the fact that the CRV has 6 cupholders whereas the discovery has only two. We silently glanced at each other and then she proceeded to inform the salesman that if someone was interested in cup holders as their final choice for a truck they probably shouldn't be purchasing a landrover anyway.
We went to VW and bought from them instead. 2002 Jetta It ROCKS!!
Just thought it was a bit interesting!

I think the Malaysian Rain Forest Challenge is a better event than the Camel Trophy. They have the rain forest challenge still. In Malaysia, the terrian in the rain forest is kind of rough. All vehicle makes can compete including Land Rovers. If I remeber correctly in the past, a person driving a Range Rover took first place.

This unaltered photo was in the USA Today newpaper. Apparently the contributer did not like the Freelander very much. He obviously does not enjoy Starbuck's or the Camel Trophy.

Paul,

If it was in the USA today, I doubt if it's un-altered. Their website got hacked and information was altered giving out wrong info about Iraq attacking Israel and crap like that...hehehe...

-glenn
*once my boss asked me...

Boss: Are we hack proof?
Me: Nope
Boss: Why not? Isn't that what we're paying you for?
Me: System Admins for the FBI and Microsoft get paid 3-4 times my annual salary and they get hacked!
Boss: Hmmm... [Kept quiet and turned around...]

ROTFL!!! You guys put a big Friday smile on my face :) That Starbucks-mobile brought tears to my eyes laughing - Sad thing is, if I drove something like that around my neighborhood, I'm afraid the majority would think it is *seriously cool*, and also ask me if I could get them some free coffee. The Honda scooter - a masterpiece!

Thanks,

Greg D. - Now if you just got rid of the mommasan, like I recently did, you wouldn't have anyone but your own conscience to answer to..... Which is sometimes just as bad. No just march in there and tell her it's 35's or the highway baby..

Kim - What's not cool about the Starbucks mobile? I'd love to have one to cruise around the mall with.. :)

Greg, you could always go some where and get high centered, have the winch not work for some odd reason, make her help push, and then tell her that you wouldn't have gotten high centered if you had 35s.. Oh and the starbucks edition paint scheme.. :)

Greg Davis
Posted on Friday, July 12, 2002 - 03:19 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Ya know Eric, that's how I justified the winch. After I bought Winston, I was telling her the mods I had in mind, including a winch. She kept saying "You don't need a winch on this, you aren't going anywhere to get stuck". So, one day we are riding around and I see a stack of logs piled up. To make a long story short, we got high-centered and a Bronco with a winch pulled us off. A few months later I had my 8274.

So Eric, you just might have something there. Besides, the 35's will be my 2nd set, so she won't have to be seen in my rig with them on that much. Just during weekend runs!

No need for a winch on the Camel Scooter, just pick it up and carry it out of the woods...I think I pissed myself!!!!!!!!!!
