Not that I would ever do this...:)
But has anyone here ever heard of (or done) "hollowing out" your catalytic converters? I know guys who've done it on older pickups. You can take the pipes apart, take a steel rod, knock all the fins out, and presto. I know on older vehicles you get more power, but would it screw up oxygen sensors or any other readings on a 95 Disco?
Of course this assumes you 1) don't worry about green house gases, and 2) have a lousy inspection station. Not sure I'm either of those, but just curious.

Its a lot of work, I found no improvement, it was very loud, and it sounded like s*#t!

I know of someone who has a 88 RR (it came with three cats) and all 3 of them are gutted out. One of the cats (middle one) got clogged and caused the Ranie to run like crap, the left side one was already gutted out from previous owner and the right hand side cat was gutted out by current owner.

Since the RR still has a resonator/muffler in the back it is not soo loud and it sounds really cool!

As far as emissions goes I think it passed w/the cats gutted. I think the owner is planning on getting the Summitt Racing cats for around $55 each.

Just my 2 cents.

Enoch,
I've got a buddy in VA that has an '87 RRC with all the cats gutted - it is a tad loud but sounds pretty good, but runs very strong - no computer problems and passes VA emissions (so far). Engine is a 3.9 (replaced the original 3.5)

we have the 4.0 without cats in the 109. no computer problems and pulls really well throughout rpm range. not loud with only a small muffler in the rear. no emmission test in OK so not too sure about that. hope this helps.

Thanks for the reports, guys. I think I may try it before I buy the new ones. I could use a few extra hp. Will definitely look into Summit racing or some other aftermarket for new ones.

Hey Snyder,
I just did 2 months ago, what your about to do. It ain't worth it. I had to take off the y pipe from the manifold, then cut off the pipe behind the cats, buy a 15" long drill bit ($15) to hack out the honycomb (you can't just poke it out with a screwdriver, its too dense), weld it back up ($20 at muffler shop), buy new hardware for the manifold to y pipe ($50 from AB) because its all ceramic coated lock nuts, just to hear this horrible "hollow, echo" type sound from the valves opening and closing. There was no improvement at all in power or MPG. Then spent $100 on summit cats, and $125 to put them in. What a big project. Waist of time and money. But don't let me stop you. Go right ahead.

Alright, maybe I won't. Hmmm. The summit cats sound like the way to go. Mine aren't dead yet, though, so I guess I'll just live with my rattle.

My first disco ran without cats for awhile, (read 10k miles) Mileage increased as did the noise, but the radio drowned it out. Oh, that truck has over 250k on it now, and the engine runs as nice as the day I bought it. (so I am told since I don't own it anymore)

It is easy to do, we actually cut the cat open and welded it back shut. I was considering placing a straight pipe on the inside of the cat, but that would have been to much work.

John
