Looking to install 4.0 into 1995 disco. I have been told two ways to add dist. 1.) install 3.9 cam and cover 2.) leave 4.0 cam in and install 3.9 cover(timing) and gear witch gets bolted into cam end My ? is the dist drive on cam or on gear bolted at the end? |

4.0 cam will not run a dist it is not set up to have the dist gear installed in the end of it. you will need a 3.9 front cover and cam to make the 4.0 run a dist. |

Drew not to second guess you (and many others) I talked to Land Rover of Rockville and they told me that I need a 4.0 cam and that the dist gear bolts on. They also said that for a while the 3.9 was out of stock, and they had to use 4.0's. When they tried to use the 3.9 cams they were indexed wrong, and wouldn't start. I think they must be wrong, but I don't want to purchase 2 cams. |

i have done several 4.0 to 3.9 swaps and have not been able to use the 4.0 cam with a dist. if rockville can do it then let them do the work for you and if it goes wrong then you can hold them responsible. |

I run a 4.6L with dizzy setup. You are not going to be able to use the 4.0 cam. I recommend the 4.2L camshaft, 4.2L coldstart eprom, Your front cover and ancillaries. Not sure if you have to clearance the oilpan for a 4.0 crank, but you have to with a 4.6 crank. Also, I believe that the cranks are different lengths from a 3.9 to 4.0, and the bottom timing gear needs to be spaced accordingly... fwiw- Craig |

You can use the 3.9 camshaft, front cover/oil pump, timing gear, heads and distributor (if they're in good shape). If your 4.0 came out of a new shape Range Rover, you'll probably have to use your 3.9 oil pan and oil pick up tube (if not clogged) and "relieve" the inside of the 3.9 oil pan to make room for the larger crank journals of the 4.0. However, unless it's purely a question of money, I'd go for the 4.6 -- you'll have to rechip the ECU but it will be a big boost in performance over the 3.9/4.0. ---Norm |
