A friend of mine from Roseau called last night with a Disco problem I couldn't answer right off. He said his wife went to the store and when she came out her 1996 SE started but it wouldn't move? Then when she went to go back inside to call a tow truck she couldn't get the key out. I immediately thought, brakelight switch or shift interlock solenoid failure at this point. So she just had the truck hauled home. The problem with my theory is my friend said you can shift the transmission into drive or any other position. The problem is the transmission doesn't appear to engage any gear when you do so. The cable is moving the linkage at least to some extent because it is still engaging and disengaging the parking postion correctly. I said are you sure the tcase isn't in neutral? He said it has park plus there is no mechanical whirring when you give it gas in a drive postion that would indicate that the transmission output shaft is turning. The only way he could find to get the key out was to disconnect the battery. He is a 300+ mile flatbed ride from the Land Rover dealer and out of warranty. If anybody has a plausible theory I am going to call him back tonight.

I had that happen to me once. I am not sure what caused it. I will tell you that I put the key and and turned it and shift into drive almost at the same time. I did it very quick. This may have caused it not to engage. I could shift up and down from park to drive 1 and nothing would engage. I then turned off the vehicle, restarted and everything was fine.

Like I posted he says it has park and won't roll unless shifted into another position so I think that eliminates all issues regarding the tcase being in neutral or the cable being parted. Ken your post is the most interesting. Can somebody verify that some combination of electrical failures can cause the transmission to refuse to engage any drive gear? The immediate and intermittent nature(in Kens case) of the problem seems to indicate a Lucas gremlin.

I called him back last night and had him take some pictures. I still haven't figured out my webspace yet or how to post a picture here so I uploaded one to my profile just click on my name above. Check out the picture of his center console and tell me what you notice.

Looks like his transfer case is in neutral. Do I win anything? :)
