Basically, the vehicle takes about 5-7 seconds of cranking for it to fire, then the RPMs run really low like 250-400 for about 5 seconds then its all back to normal with a idle speed around 625 or so and runs clean. Also, when it first starts it is obviuosly running quite rich. If the vehicle is started within 5- 10 miutes of being last shut off, it starts right up, otherwise its back to normal. No faults have been detected by the OBD readout by the way.. Oh yeah, its a 3.9... |

Oh.. Its not the coolant temp. sensor, already been replaced since its cheap, I assume its not the O2 sensors because its runs well otherwise (and no faults displayed), the plug wires have been replaced, and the OBD sensor is working because I've ran several tests such as putting faulty CTS and FTS to see if they showed up as faulty.. Please help... |

Fuel Pump? Look through this thread, I had a similar problem with my 95 3.9. If you end up replacing the pump, follow the steps I've posted. |

(At least) One of your injectors is leaking down while it is parked, causing it to act like it is choked. Let me guess...big cloud of white smoke when it finally starts? I am going through the same thing. I changed what I thought was the bad one. It wasn't it. Now I am trying to find a way to figure out which one it is. Good luck. |

Thanks for the tips... I started with the fuel pump, didn't fix it but it was the OEM pump so it couldn't hurt... Removed the injectors and pressure tested up at the local shop and Voila! 3 out of the 8 were leaking. So it's fixed and I'm happy... |

Ryan- I have the EXACT same problem with my 96. How long did it take you to yank the injectors? |

I also have the EXACT same proble with my 96 Disco. I was going to replace the fuel pump, but now I have decided to hold off on that. Can an "average Joe" take the fuel injectors out? If so, how much will the cost me to get fixed (parts/labor)? Thanks for your help! |

It seems that a lot of us have this same problem. I have a 1996 Disco that started doing this about 6 months ago. Any suggestions? Thanks |

Check your plug wires are seated properly and if old replace Remember start with the cheap fix first...they could be loose after all...... |

Sorry about the delay in response time... Unfortunately you probably wouldn't be able to test them yourselves without the proper equipment.. the dealership does have this or should. But if you do have access the specs for the leak test are pressurize the system to 2.54 Kgf/cm2 and the book says it should leak no more than 2 drops of fuel per minute. There is also a possiblilty that something made its way through the fuel system and is wedged between the needle valve in the injector and its seat rather than the actual injector seal being faulty. As far as buying new injectors, I would look around first for remanufactured injectors. They are quite a bit cheaper and seem to be good as new... |

I have been having the same problem on my '96 disco and now my questions are answered. I'm just wondering how many of my injectors are leaking. |

How much does it cost to get the injectors checked at most places? The Import specialist told me that he has seen 8 Discos in his shop with this problem and 7 of the 8 were all Fuel Pump. Hmmmm....I am still uncertain if it is my pump or injectors and I am very broke, so I'm trying to go the cheapest way about this. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks - Rhett e-mail me at : [email protected] |

Have heard of this problem before with injectors staying open. The cause was rust in the fuel system holding the injectors open and may have originated from the fuel rail. Believe they stated to remove the fuel filter and bang it on a white surface and check for rust particles. They also did the same with the fuel pressure regulator and found that rust was trapped in their also. (only the british could make metal that can rust in petrol) |
