Is it possible to utilize the steering wheel controls on an after-market stereo? I was in Tweeters last night in Springfield checking out an Alpine 3 disk in dash changer for my DII.

I've been told that once you change the factory unit with something else the controls no longer work. This was from Crutchfield, but for a D1.

Thanks Brian,

I am not sure what I really want to do. An installed Alpine changer head unit is still $450 cheaper than a Dealer installing their changer.

That was the problem I was running into when I wanted to add a cd player. What finally worked for me was adding an FM modulated cd changer in the same place where the factory unit would go. It was within my budget and was a simple install.

Brian,

What about water or dirt intrusion? Damage was the reasoning to install a changer unit in the dash versus a changer unit on the floor under the passenger seat. Or am I incorrect?

You are correct about possible damage due to dirt and water. If anything water would be the killer. As for dirt, it's under the seat behind a kick plate fairly protected. I try to avoid water crossings that are deeper than the hubs, regardless. If I know there will be a risk of water entering I would then remove the unit as I have it installed in a basic way. I also have the option of moving the unit to a higher location in the back.

The dash pod controls for the factory stereo are just momentary contact closures that you can access from the harness that plugged into the back of the factory radio. Depending on how much trouble you wanted to go through, you could either hardwire these into your new head unit or if your new head unit has remote control capabilty, you could interface the Disco controls with your remote.
