i'll be throwing a Power steering box in my range rover tonight.

i have the factory manual and it looks like an hour job, but i'm planning 5 hr

two hoses, 5 bolts and line some shit up.

my questions are this,

the manual says all this shit about removing the steering wheel and cruise controll cassette unwind and all kinds of scary.

Well i aint taking the wheel off. my thought was to vice grip the steering shaft comming off the wheel, in two places 180 deg apart and having the plyers hit the frame on one side and the engine on the other, this will prevent the steeringwheel from rotating or what ever.

next is do really HAVE to take the drop arm off the drag link?? ? i'm thinking no, just take it off the box and reattatch it to the new box.

i am going to cut the wheels hard left then vice grip the shaft.

when i install the new box i'll also do crank it hard left prior to installation... thus making everything hunky-dory

am i an imbecile for thinking up this methode? any hints or pointers are appreciated.

LOL I've never swapped a box out, but your logic sounds fine to me.

Getting the drop arm off is the trick. You need a sick gear puller to get them off usually. Also I have seen them fly off so leave the nut on the bottom while cranking until you get it loose a little.

Otherwise, no issues.

there is a notch in the arm that lines up with a bolt hole in the 'box if you wanted to line it up that way. Also, don't let the steering wheel free wheel, the spiral cassette will eventually break. Don't ask me how I know...

i did it and it took much longer than i had hoped but still within reason.

i got a 6" gear puller that worked great , though i was amazed how many cranks it took to pop the arm off. there are 4 big splines on the drop arm so you really can't go wrong. my biggest problem with the whole thing was getting the box off of the steering nuckle splines, and the new one on. i had to resort to using a hammer for both (though i did pry open the splined coller with a screw driver on the reinstal, helped a lot.)

not removing the tie rod end was a stupid idea, in the big picture it was the easiest thing to do.

my vice grip idea was idiotic. all i had to do was take the key out of the ignition and turn the wheel a bit and it automatically locks (anti theft). so that wasn't a worry after all.

i cant explain how grimy my frame was even after i had repeatedly degreased the area prior to the installation. this is the dirtiest install i've ever done.

the new one leaks a bit, but no more puddle.. this i can live with.

i almost had a failure on my test run. i took it around the block and then inspected, everything looked fine until i had noticed i pushed a trannie cooler hose onto an engine pully. it wore a slight groove in it. 10 more miles would have been a fun blowout.

here is a picture of the mess half way thru.

Dam I did the bearings on here car and she did not even get me a beer. time to upgrade to mistress 1.0, bad idea I'm doing a life term now don't need the death penalty.
