I think I can get this 1973 model for about $9,500. It has a new motor and transmission which was put in recently. I have a picture. And how well can these trucks go in off road situations? Here is a picture of the Pinzgauer: http://www.expedition-imports.com/25792.jpg |

Hello Warn. Does Look a lot like the Unimog 404. http://www.4wdonline.com/Unimog/404.html You may want to check with DOT to see if it's legal. I'd buy it anyway. Cool truck! -Tom |

The unit is a Pinzgauer. Built in Graz, Austria. You can buy them all day for $9500 so there is nothing special about the price. It has independent suspension that doesn't flex all that well, but better than a common Jeep Wrangler or Cherokee. It will do about 65-70 on the highway near sea level, but slower at elevation. Parts are easily available for them. They are 2wd/w4d with hydraulic activated lockers front and rear. They have portal axles of a swing design which give about 13" of ground clearance under the diffs on the stock tires. You can fit 33" tires without modification. For more information on how they compare to a Land Rover, and for a bunch of pictures and text that highlight its features go here: http://www.spanishtrailrovers.com/Tech/Info/Whats_a_Pinzgauer/whats_a_pinzgauer.html Good luck |

Hi Warn If it is the pinzgauer in the picture, than dont buy it, it is too expensive. The Pinzgauer in the picture was sold by the swiss army and the F on the window means that you cant drive it home. So there are some major problems with the engine or transmission or breaks. The also have a lot of rust normally. And like it is always with army cars, the drivers really didn't look very good after the car. You may wonder way I am telling all that, but I really know what I am talking about. I am Sergant-Major in the Swiss-Army, and I could drive one if I wanted for free anytime. But I have choosen a Discovery. I also think that you really will have problems to get spare parts in the USA. But one thing is really true, there are nearly no conditions which can stop a Pinzgauer in Offroad conditions. Greetings from Switzerland Andy PS It has nothing to do with a unimog. There is also a 6x6 version which is used by the army |

Andy, You are relating some serious mis-information to this gentleman. Yes, the "F" classification means a major fault has been noted, but the vendor where the vehicle is located is one of the best in the entire US. They correct major and minor faults before sale to people in the US. Any major fault it had when the vehicle went to auction has been corrected, and the vehicle will have had a thorough servicing before sale. This vendor also generally corrects rust problems and will re-paint when and where necessary. The prices for vehicles in the US is not similar to where you are. Here, the Pinzgauer is about 1/2 the cost of a good Discovery. Getting spare parts in the US for the pinzgauer is exactly the same as it is for a Land Rover. If parts are needed quickly, ANYTHING can be had overnight. There are a similar amount of parts vendors for Pinzgauers as Land Rovers here in the US. |

The pinz is OK, but I'd personally rather have a Unimog! |

I remember reading a while back that DC was going to import the Mogs to the US and sell it under Freightliner. Anyone hear any more? |

The Unimog certainly has some advantages over the Pinz, but the Pinz has some things going for it too. Particularly the fact that it's small and nimble. The fact that it is reasonably quick on the highway, and has selectable lockers front and rear is another advantage. The Unimog is cheaper and has cheaper parts in general. And it's more competent off-road, but it's pretty slow if you need to take it on the road. You are also going to need to invest in some man-sized tools to do a lot of the work on the Mog. Both are terrific trucks though. |

Hi PerroneFord Okay, my informations were related to the picture. We everything is fixed on the Pinzgauer then maybe its gonna worth it. But even when everthing is done, there are still some things to think about. If you wanna use as a daily driver, then it is the wrong car, it is also not very good for long distance driving. Because, a Pinzgauer is very noise (an there isn't much you can do about it). There is no comfort at all (you are lucky when the heating produce engouh hot air to defrost the windshild), and it also uses a lot of gas. The price would be fair, when considering that the car was rebuild and shipped the the us from europe. One reason why i would be also carefully, is the other peoples choice. You dont see much pinzgauer on the street hear in europe, not even on grounds for 4x4 freaks. And its not the price which is the problem. So once again. If you want a real serious offroad vehicle, with a lot of space, and just use it for that cause, then go for it. But in my opinion, there are other cars which perfom quite as well and are much cheaper and comfortable. Specially when you live in the usa (sorry but i cant write the name on this side, but it starts with a J) But one thing you have for sure with a pinzauer in the USA. A headturning and very unique car. Greetings from Switzerland Andy PS Remind, this is just my opinion, maybe I have driven to many Pinzgauer in my miliary time :-) |

Thank you Andy. I understand what you are saying. You need to remember that the Pinzgauer is very similar in noise and speed to the older land rovers, particularly from the 1960s. The Pinzgauer is more capable than those trucks and less expensive. You are correct that they are not good for long distances, but I know many people who drive them as everyday vehicles here in the US, and who take long trips in them regularly. They don't use any more gas than most of our Range Rovers or Discoveries so that is not really a problem. These vehicles, and others like them are getting more popular for 4x4 enthusiasts here in the US. The trucks are well built, parts are inexpensive compared to Land Rovers, and they have many features from the factory that others have to pay for. Hopefully WARN understands that a Pinzgauer or Unimog is really not very comfortable for use every day. If he understands that, then I think the Pinzgauer is a terrific truck with a lot of good features. Thanks -P |

I know a guy with a Pinzgauer here in the US who loves it and says he's had no trouble with it. This thing should go just about anywhere you want off road -- apparently you can lock any combination of wheels and/or differentials you want with a set of levers inside the cab (no a/c, though). I think the guy here paid $7500 for it -- seems like a good alternative to a $30,000 second-hand Defender and seems to be a lot more manageable in size than a Unimog. |

Holy Crap! I know someone who is selling a Haflinger which only needs a motor to transaxle adaptor/bell housing for only $1000.00! I found it today. I am picking it up. Here is a picture of the Haflinger-Swiss: http://www.expedition-imports.com/haf_1.jpg |

Any opinions on the Haflinger-Swiss? Usually they price them like what the Pinzgauer goes for. I can drive my Discovery as a daily driver. I need another vehicle to drive around town in. Thanks for your replies. |

The Haflinger is VERY small, very nimble, but very slow. I've been in them before. They are really more like an ATV than a truck though. It's hard to give you any real information when you haven't told us anything about what kind of wheeling you intend to do. If you are rock-crawling, I'd stay away from the Pinz and Haflinger because they don't flex well enough. The Unimog flexes well but is slow. For deep mud, the Mog is too heavy in most cases and doesn't have enough motor. The Pinz is a pretty good compromise for most terrains. |
