I just noticed a a very low (not very loud) high pitch whine when excelerating over 80mph. I'm not sure if it's always been there. As soon as I get off the gas it stops, and the pitch increases when I give it gas. It's a 99DII (stock) Any thoughts from the Disco gods?? Thanks Carl |

thanks Greg! I think that's why I might not have noticed it in the past. In fact, if my wife hadn't changed all the music in the CD player I might never had noticed. |

I have a similar sound. almost like a dog whistle, only at high speeds. But when I tap the brakes, it goes away for a moment. BUt it's not long before it comes back. I am guessing my problem is some scraping in the brake pad area, but i really have no idea. it's not something I can determine when the car is parked. |

Hey Carl, Take you're roof rack off... I think that's your roof rack symphony in D major... It's especially loud if you're in any of the "highways" in the NYC area and the New Jersey Turnpike by the Bayonne area... hehehe -glenn |

There are two (actually more) common problems... uh... I mean features on the D2 (and most Rovers). Above about 30-40mph you'll hear a transfer case whine and at or over 65mph you may hear a high pitch noise that's caused by wind noise. The solution is to turn up the radio as Greg said. Or you can add mud tires and a roof rack and the problem will be fixed. |

Does it happen at lower speeds but same revs? I'm wondering about intake roar, Chris Browne |

Hey Glenn, Don't worry, it's not the roof rack. I know that sound all too well. Al, I think your right about the t-case, that was I thought it was. So that's "normal"..good to hear. The noise is so slight I had to point it out for my wife to hear it. If I can handle the roof rack in D minor, and my wife's music, I can handle this. "and the New Jersey Turnpike by the Bayonne area" ..now that's funny...that's exactly where I was. Damn Jersey!! |

what if this is a recent occurance? I have the whistling now - but only for the last couple weeks. I've had the rover for years. It's not the roof rack. |

Pat, You said it goes away "when you tap the brakes", does it go away if you just let off the gas? |

LOL!! Paul, that's the second reason I don't think I've ever heard this noise before. I don't think I ever got it past 70!!! |

I have a good hill I can use to get to 80mph. If I have a tail wind I might even pickup an extra 5mph! That is if I had just waxed my car and filled it up half way with 94 octane. |

Carl & guys, I'd been noticing something similar on mine for the last month or two: high-pitched whine, barely audible, when I got to around 65-70 (haven't been to 80), disappears when I let off the gas. Nobody else can hear it. Today, I drove a loaner from the dealer and heard the same thing at even lower speeds. So I guess it's normal, like Al says. Radio knob is a definite "fix". Kent |

Carl - Kent My whine goes away when I tap the brakes, but if I just let off the gas it stays. It appears to be something brake related because if I tap the brakes it goes away for a while, but if I coast down or speed up the sound remains. |

KENT!!! Good to here fom you my friend, hope all is well. I think it is gear box whine, and I feel better about it now hearing that more of you "hear it" also. Patrick, I think your right that your problem is brake related. Pull your wheels and brake pads and have a look down there. Carl |

I also hear the loud whining noise.... Not usually in the rover though... Usually in the house coming from 2 small kids and my wife...(hope she doesn't read this) hehehe... -glenn |

Glenn! That's another spin on the mother-in-law joke; I hope your wife doesn't frequent DWeb. Tell her it was a typo, you just meant the kids, only the kids and the dog. Carl, good to see you here too. You disappeared for a while. Personally, I think it's time for another run to S. Jersey. Kent |
