I'm going to be purchasing a pair of they're sliders, hopefully before Friday, and I'm not sure if i should drive down there and ahve them install it, or do it myself. I'll be traveling to VA for to go wheelin' on friday afternoon, and thought, heck if i'm down there i can stop by and have them install the sliders. Or I'll see if i can order them today and get them installed myself before Friday. Thanks, Zak |

Better check with RT on availability before making and grandios plans so you aren't dissapointed. As an aside, if you are moderately handy and have a drill with the corrct drill bits and either a pair of jack stands or a buddy to help hold the slider up, installation should not be very difficult. ZaK: I've got the RTE sliders on my D2, did the install myself, very easy as long as you double-check your fitting before each drilling. BTW, I guess I'll see you on Fri or Sat. -Mike |

I've also added them to my D2 and they're very easy. The only thing I would like to add is for those with ACE vehicles. Don't drill out the forward most passenger side hole. If you look on the inside of the sill you'll see one of the inertia sensors there and it's not wise to drill that out. You may also need to modify the inside part of the slider to get it to fit. |

John notched mine for me at the shop and I painted it myself, no big deal. However, instead of using the front through bolt mount, I drilled into the sill and used another rivnut. |

I more or less followed John Lee's slider install directions when I installed mine on the '96. |

If you have ACE, you will need to let John now ahead of time so that he can fab a pair with a notch to handle the sensor. Also, there is a lead-time for the fabrication so check with John for availability. FYI, the new and improved RTE sliders on the DII have added reinforcement points to help stop the sliders from twisting the sill if pressure is applied to the outside edge of the nerf bars. You will need to remove the front doors to drill these new mount points. I actually had to remove the rear doors as well but that's only because I needed about another 1/4 inch of clearance to get my drill level to go completely through the sill. This could just be a problem with my drill but I'm letting you know the things I ran into. I did come up with some good pointers for dealing with the doors, if you decide to do it yourself and are interested. Get a friend to help you. It's not necessary but the damn things are heavy and you will be happy for the extra set of hands when you are trying to move the sliders around and position them just right. I was in a similar situation when I did my install. Getting ready for a trip and figured, "What the heck. I should be able to get these things installed tonight." I did get them installed, by myself, with a minimal set of tools. However, I was up much later than I anticipated. A leisurely weekend install would have been much better than a rushed, last minute one. FWIW. I do have to say that the RTE sliders are outstanding and I'm glad that I went with them. Rick |

I agree, They are the best I've seen out there for the D2. I opted for the sliders without the "nerf bars" before John added the reinforcements for fear of twisting the sills. The sliders held up very well on every trip I've done since. |

Yup, I'll see you this weekend Mike! I forgot to mention that i have a D1. OOps. I really like to RTE's because of the nerf bars. My wife is a bit on the short side (5'-0") and she's now pregnant and will have a little trouble down hte road trying to get in. The RTE's looked the best of both worlds, Sliders and a step. Now I just have to see if I can get them before the weekend, looks like the guys are going to do some difficult trails, and I need all the protection i can get. Thanks for the help Zak |

Zak, my wife couldn't stand getting in the Disco. But when she was pregnant she loved getting out of it. All she had to do was put her feet out and fall |

ZaK: Don't push it for this weekend if it causes any grief, the trails down here aren't that tough. There are some rocks here and there but it's easy to drive around them if you have to. |

I just went through this process. Since I am constantly on the go, it was easier for me to stop by John's shop on the way to NC. I spent about three hours there assisting with the install and I even ordered a Pizza. Anyway, I emailed John two weeks prior to coming down to make sure he had the parts and an open shop. He was very accommodating (sp) to help me out. IMHO, I think these sliders and the installation process is very structuraly sound. Especially with the 1/2" d. bolts. Paul |

I'm not in any real rush to get them, but my wife has already almost fallen out of the disco trying to get into the passanger seat this past weekend. She had on sandals with not grip and once they hit the carpet, she almost went flying. Luckly she had a hold of the "oh shit" handle. |

I emailed him a week or so ago, and he quited me a price for installation. I was just curious if he gave you a break on the install price for helping out, and ordering a pizza. I tried to get a hold of him today, so I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks |

Zak, Install is easy, if you have a pnuematic rivnut puller. Without, you will have some trouble using the rivnut tool that comes with the sliders. Call John and if he has the sliders, let him help install on Friday. Ron Ward |

Ron: That's a good point about the rivnuts. If you haven't had experience with rivnuts, it can be difficult getting the "feel" of the mounting as you close down on the rivnut. ONce you get the hang of it though, it's easy. |

I've never used them before. I've read just about every install directions i could find on the net, and I'm not sure if i install them to use the rivnuts, or use long bolts and go all the way through the frame. Hopefully i can get in touch with John and see if i can stop by on Friday morning get them installed with Johns help. Thanks for all the info.` |

Both. There are 1/2" through bolts and rivnut mounts on each slider. EE has the definitive RTE install (even RTE uses EE's version). CHeck it out Zak: EE Slider Install |

Hi Again, Yes they are bolted through the frame with 1/2" d. bolts. The rivnut system provides a stable support for drilling / installing the larger through the frame bolts. Also the rivnut system provides a way of bringing the frame / sill together with the slider. This was important for me because I had already damaged the LH aft sill area. John could probably explain it a lot better than I can. So as Ho says "Just do it!" Paul |

I talked to John yesterday and he will not be able to install/ help me install my sliders tomorrow, so I ordered a pair from his next batch. I should get them next week or the week after. Anybody care to come over and give me a hand installing them? I'll provide beer/food/wine/whatever you would like!!!! |

Zak, Depending on when you are doing the install and how far it is from Conshohocken, I would love to come up......... if for no other reason than to just watch the install. I'm very willing to help, but have never installed sliders before. I would probably install my own at some point so watching/helping would be good for me when it comes time to do my own. If it's a weekend, I may could drag Ron Brown with me, depending on his work schedule at LR Mainline. He has probably done this before. |

Cool. If Paul is back in town, and the weekend is such that I can get Ron to tag along, you will have a full crew! That way, you've got Paul who just did his own with Johns help. Ron who is a LR Service Manager. And me, who has absolutely no experience whatsoever.......... Sounds like a Motley Crew to me Greg |

Put Rovertym sliders on my 97 D1 today. It took me about 4 hours total. The first slider went a little slow as I followed the instructions. The second one went much faster/easier as I discarded the instructions. Didn't need the 90 degree angle chuck. It was really good to have pnuematic tools to drive all those bolts/nuts on/off/on/off/on/off....... Didn't do all that on/off crap with the second slider. Using jack stands helped to get the initial positioning ... especially since it was only me. |

Zak, Maybe it was just me... but almost none of the large through-bolt holes lined up from inside to outside. The sliders are each a 2-piece assembly consisting of the heavy rail that you can see and the angle piece that goes up under the body... out of sight. Getting the thru-bolts lined up was a bit tricky. I did use the drill guide but almost none of the bolts lined up. For the second slider, I completely attached and snugged down all the rail's bolts before doing the inside angle piece. Then I made sure that I jacked the angle tight and clamped it both vertically and horizontally and used at least one of the bolts that did line up to align it to the rail's holes. Then I redrilled the 1/2 holes (from outside) essentially using the angle's holes as the guide to get the holes lined up properly. The Al is, of course, softer than the inside steel angle so the drill naturally took the path of least resistance.... things lined up and the fit had the angle piece tight to the body. I didn't do any angle drilling or horizontal drilling from under the truck. The closest I came to that was the 6 holes for the bottom rivnuts of the "rail". Doing the rivnuts was fairly easy but I appreciated the advice that John gave me about using the boxend wrench to help hold the rivnut steady while drawing the inside up against the body metal. Some of the old holes were so close that the rivnuts went into holes that had gaps ... but after "scrunching" the rivnuts they seemed tight and firm. Again, as I said in my previous e-mail, using a couple of jack stands to sit the rail on and then move it up close to the body with a floor jack was a big help. They also provided place to rest the rail without moving it very far when I need to drill out the underneath-rivnuts from 3/8 to 1/2 . I also used a sharped crayon to mark the holes and edges of the rail so that I could get things back in position as I took the rail on/off. With all the help you're going to have, I hope there enough for everyone to do. Only so many people can fit under the truck... but then again, maybe ya'll will be doing both side at once and getting it all done in half the time..... let's see... how does that math question go ?..... If it takes one women nine months to have a baby, how many month will it take 3 women and a girl ? Math question #2: If it takes a sober LR newbie 4 hours to install 2 sliders, how long will it take half a dozen intoxicated PA LR..ites ? Have the most fun you can with your goggles and workgloves on ! P.S. John recommended the NAPA spray-on undercoating. I bought some but didn't use it (yet) because i didn't want to wait for it to dry.... you know... I was impatient to get the sliders on and all that . |
