I hope to pick up a '99 Discovery I tomorrow. It is almost my ideal truck (it is lacking rack and CD player). The first thing I plan to do is remove the running boards. I would assume they would create a clearance issue and they truly give it that "mall crawler" image (which this one has been).

Is this easy to do? Aesthetically will I need to do anything once they are remove or will it just look like a Disco w/o them (no mounts showing, etc.?).

Lastly, is there any value to these on the used market?

Thanks,
Todd

You can remove the running boards by removing 4 bolts per side. Crawl under there and the process will become very self evident. Then, you should remove the brackets that hold the running boards on. Again, I think just 4 bolts per side. The whole process will take less than 30 minutes.

Yes, you can sell your running boards on the Discoweb. I sold mine sold for about $180.00. Your mileage may vary.

If you don't plan to go off-roading right away (if at all), you might just want to leave them on for a bit. My wife and son used to really love the running boards. I took mine off whenever I went off-roading for nearly 2 years. Finally, I upgraded to the RoverTym sliders and sold the side steps.

Thanks,
Mike B.

P.S. - Welcome to the 'club'.

they are super easy to take off...i think 4 bolts per board. once you take them off, the only noticable thing will be that the front mud flaps will have a notch cut out of them so you will want to take off the mud flaps(or replace with uncut ones)

Thanks Mike. Glad to know they are worth something. I could see my wife liking them but I hate stepping over them to get in.

I am thinking of selling them along with the stock front brush guard and bumper to put the funds towards a better after market front bumper with more clearance. We'll see.

So... can someone tell me about trimming the front to gain clearance? I seem to recall something about this in a thread.

Thanks! Can't wait to get it.

Trimming the front is very easy. If there are fog lights, pop the hood and disconnect them. Once you crawl under the front there are a few screws that seperate the end caps from the air dam. Then there are a few bolts that hold the air dam on. Take it out. Then you need to trim the end caps. I would suggest taking them off, but I guess you really don't have to. A Dremel does wonders. If you have any questions, shoot me an e-mail [email protected], I have done it several times now.

Congratulations on your Disco! I have a 99D1 too and it's been great. Don't forget to take some pics when you get it and send them to Ho for your very own Discoweb Gallery! Lots of luck with it!
