Well my 96' Disco engine is shot. One week after putting in a brand new altenator and MAFS chip my Disco's timing belt blew & overheated the engine to a warm crisp. Now the money hogs at the dealer estimate at least $10K to get a new engine. Is there any way i can get my disco' to move for something way less? I've heard of people swapping in Chevy engines for half that price. Your input would be greatly appreciated! I don't want to scrape an otherwise perfect disco! Also any Los Angeles area shops that you know of that could help me would be awsome!

If you have a '96 Rover v8, you have a timing chain to run the cam and valve gear and a serpentine belt to run the ancillaries. I take it the serpentine belt failed, disabled the water pump and caused the motor to overheat. Did it crack/warp the block? Is your motor a 4.0 or a 3.9?

Don't get a replacement from the dealer -- they're liable to get the first motor off the shelf from LR which could be a "new" rebuilt motor and charge you the same as if it's brand spanking new. $10,000 is a lot, even for a stealership, the dealer here quoted me $7,000 installed for a 3.9L.

I wouldn't consider an engine swap to a Chevy unless you want to keep your truck in the shop for the next six months. Any savings in $$$ (if any at all) will be offset by the time spent trying to make fit everything.

Consider this an opportunity to make lemonade out of lemons -- here's your excuse to put in a new 4.6, which is a major power boost over the 3.9/4.0. Check the RPi website. You can buy their motor from British Car Co. in Marin County and have it installed by them or your local stealership with an ECU chip and get a 12/12 warranty.

I went with Rovers Land out of Miami www.roversland.com $2490.00 for a long block. So far so good on quality 4 months and 9,000 miles later. It does come with a 12 month 12,000 mile war. also. Unfortunatly the last time I checked they didn't go with any of the Quality upgrades just stock parts, but if you maintain well it should still last.

Thanks for all the info so far guys! My disco only had 78K miles on it when it died :( Norm, would that be marin county up by the bay area? "Make lemonade out of lemons" what a great comment. I'm having the stealership send me a list of all the components that need to be replaced so until then i only know the stealership wants me to spend all my money on the new engine from them.

Jorge, I'm located in Jax FL
I only had to use them once for the engine, some of there maint. parts are high. If you need expensive parts engine, •••••, ac comp. or stuff like that they were by far the best price. Service was ok but for the price I paid and the delivery charge I couldnt beet it. The dealer quoted me $7000.00 for engine I had to try them.
I live in jax fl by the

Call RoverLand (813) 269-2220) here in Tampa. They usually have a few engines sitting on the shelves (pulled from wrecks). Just do a straight swap and be done with it.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Drew,

Yes, that's British Car Co. in Marin County, CA, Corte Madera, I believe.

Do you have a 3.9 or a 4.0 motor? You can probably shop around and get a better deal on a new 4.6 motor but you will need to reprogram your fuel map so the 4.6 won't run lean and burn up. I believe Roverland's 4.6s are rebuilt, but they sound pretty resonable @ $2500.

If you have a 4.0, I believe you'll have to send your entire GEMS ecu to RPi to be reprogrammed. If it's a 3.9 (like mine was), you'll use a 3.9 front cover/oil pump, camshaft & timing gear to drive the distributor and rechip the ECU with a Tornado chip.

As far as diesel conversions in the USA, check East Coast Rover, but I think their conversion costs $20,000 or more.

Check the range rover board archives for info on the guy who reprograms ECU chips if you want to take that route.

This site has chevy conversion info, http://www.jpurnell.com/RR/

I would buy another 3.9 just like yours except one that had already been rebuilt to fix the carbon build up/ valve issues I hear some of the 96 year have and get a reputable good old boy to drop it in and be done with it. Also look on www.lrx.com for engines. Sorry for your loss...
