My electric fan on the passenger side is not working. At a red light or in traffic with the a\c the disco will overheat. Anyone got a fix or heard of this happening with a 98 disco. I did a search and it turned up no positive results. H |

Hank: As much as I hate to say this, you almost certainly need a new radiator, or at the very least, a rodding of the old one, or perhaps recoring of the existing one. It is pretty common, in spite of the diligence with which you may have maintained your vehicle's cooling system. I am sympathetic as I am in the same boat and have received two new radiators from the UK and both have been severely damaged in shipping. |

Hank, Where are you located? I have a 95'Disco that was over heating. I found that both fans had died. LR wanted like $245 for each fan. Check the condition of your cooling fins especially those on the lower front (Towards the AC condensor) if you find they crumble to the touch, it's time for a recore. I had mine done for around $245 with 4 fins per inch coring. If the core is on good shape and you're in a hot climate, you will need the fans when running the AC. There was an article a while back about someone using SPAL 11" low profile fans with good results. With a little searching, the best price I could find on them was $99 each. I ended up with a set of 10" ProCool High Performance fans from Summit Racing ($75 each). They are higher output than stock (1250 cfm each). The installation was relativily easy, just snip your wires as close to the fan motors as possible and then you can splice in the new fans. They don't fit like "stock" fans, but so far they have run great and I have taken them off-road several times without problems. They definetly move some air through the engine compartment when standing still. Check out the SPAL fans, in the previous article, they writer indicated it was "almost" a stock fit. If I can answer any questions, drop me a line. Mike Cox Palm Bay 95 Disco |

Someone please explain to me WHY its the radiator that needs replacing when my 95 Disco overheats in traffic/red light. Almost at 100k miles and I replaced the fan clutch but it didnt get any better. |

Typically the ones with a bad rad overheat under load. Your fan clutch in good Shape Hank ? Kyle |

Because the tubes inside the raditor clog up and restric the flow, Like Paul said you may need to get it rodded out or at least remove the Tstat and see if it runs cooler |

Hey Hank, my fan on the passenger side doesnt work either, but I dont have any overheating problems. My needle stays solid at the bottom third. You've probably got a clogged radiator. |

Lets not forget that Hank is in Texas and it is hot there... Hank, my truck ran cool in Minnesota, but found that the e-fan didn't come on in traffic and in Houston, it got kinda hot. If the fan is not working thats the first thing to fix. Check out thermostat, radiator and fan clutch too, its a good time to do it and I know its damned hot down there. |

I have come to the conclusion that a new radiator is the only way to go, especially since I am here in Sweaty Florida. The difference between rodding and a new one is small enough to just bite the bullet and buy a new one from Nathan at Doiscount Rovers especially since I plan to keep mine a while. |

Fan clutch was working, the fins looked fine, I removed the thermostat and it didn't help. I'm wondering if removing the thermostat wouldn't intensify the problem due to losing pressure in the system, or not giving it enough pressure to pass through the heads properly?? I'm going to pull the electric fan this weekend and try that, a new thermostat, and flush the system real good. |

Gentlemen: Nathan will not likely ship you a radiator due to the experiences that he and I have recently had with extensive shipping damage. According to the E-mail he sent me after the second radiator was delivered to me in two pieces, he isn't going to be selling any more radiators. Those of you who are having these radiators recored for ~$250 are fortunate as my local reputable radiator shop quoted me seven dollars more to recore my radiator than a brand new one from Nathan cost (but still $200 less than AB or RN). As painful as it is, I have had to secure a second (Junk?) radiator to have recored while I drive with the clogged radiator. I'm hopeful I can find a heavier duty core and lower the duty cycle on the fans and viscous coupling. The only good thing to come from this is that I have confirmed that my vicious coupling does in fact work as one can tell the difference in sound when the coupling engages. Paul |

I'm getting ready to pull the radiator on my 95' Disco (88K miles) as well as I've ruled out just about everything else. I found a shop here in Chicago that will rod the radiator for $75 and recore for $200. I'll post after the experience if all goes well. I appear to have a small leak at or near the back of the intake manifold. I thought this might be a leaking head gasket, but maybe its leaking at the intake manifold. Anyone had any success at tightening the intake manifold bolts to cure this leak spot? Thanks, Robc |

Took the radiator to the repair shop and the core was totally gone, about 25% efficient, if that. Could never have told from looking down the fill hole on top of the radiator. Only 88K miles and radiator is gone.....hard to believe. All is well now, needle back to normal. Total cost is $320 for recore. Auto Kool in Villa Park, IL 630-834-0614, ask for Bill. What's next.....can hardly wait. Truck is starting to grow on me (only took a few years). Robc |

Here is the latest on my cooling fun. New electric fan. Flushed the system. New thermostat. Cleaned the fins out really well. Still overheating. Tried the redneck approach and pinned the fan to the clutch. No more overheating.... Replacing the fan clutch tonight!! Kyle got it! I owe you a beer! When I talked to the LR tech he said it should be really difficult to move the fan when the truck was hot. So I let it heat up and turned the motor off and there was resistance but I guess it was not enough to get the job done. |

Take out your turn signal indicators, by pulling on the spring loaded thingymabob. Remove one screw that it reveals on the painted body panel below it, above the bumper. Remove the grille. If you are replacing the fans with LR factory replacements it will be simple, just unbolt the old ones and bolt on the new ones and plug it in. I replaced mine with one from O'reilly the 10" ProCool fan cost 60 bucks (buddy deal). I'm not sure what you'll pay for it elsewhere... I used the zip tie type installation kit and pushed them through both the collector and the radiator, put the back on them and snipped off the excess. From there just wire it up, I soldered and shrink wrapped mine, since it will get wet when driving in the rain. |

Hank I am having the same problem as you. When you say you pinned the fan to the clutch. What do you mean? Also where is the fan clutch? I have the workshop manual couldnt find it. Charles SATX |

Hank, do you mean all I have to remove is the front grill to get in there? I had the grill removed but couldnt see how to get them out. I thought I had to remove the condensor to get those fans out. |

Bill, I removed only the grille and the pieces that cross in front of it (passenger side) that are attached to the hood latch. The drivers side looks to be tricky, after looking at it again last night. You may have to take out the condensor to get that one out. But if you are taking out the condensor, both sides will be even easier to access! Charles, drill a small hole through the viscous coupler and through the fan. Put a nut and bolt through it. Heat the engine up to operating temp, then turn on the ac. If it doesnt overheat, replace the fan clutch. |

Hank, thanks for the info. I did it this afternoon. I didnt have to remove the sidelights though, and wound up cutting the wires (connector didnt seem to budge) and making a solid splice. Works good and took about 45min. Not very hard at all. |

I have 1995 Disco and I'm in the middle of replacing the 3.9 to a 4.0( many mods will post later); but have a ? of when the aux fans should come on. Not when , but at what temp? What I have have noticed as soon as the engine warms up the aux fans come on. It's like you couldn't drive anywhere, say, when the ambient temp is over 80F, without the aux fans coming on. This is with the a/c off. I have allready removed thermostat. Is there a temp sensor for the aux fans ? If so how would one check? |

I thought the Aux fans come on when A/C is on. Charles |

I think the fans come on 1) when the AC is turned on and 2) When the temp sensor gets high enough (the temp sensor on the thermostat housing). |

A similar question. 95 Disco. I can drive for hours with normal temp, if there is a good incline for miles, then it will rise. Upon driving hours, being in traffic, it will raise the temp again. I recently had it flushed, it was pretty clean. After a trip today and in the garage, I noticed the two front fans were NOT on. I believe they should have been. Where should I start to look into this? Thanks. Dino feel free to reply directly to me [email protected] |
